After reading Langa’s latest writeup I ran hijackthis on my W7 SP1 64-bit laptop. The log file shows many entries with “missing file.”

Where are the best places to submit such a log file for analysis?

    Thank you,
    Dick

Do you think the PC is infected?

Most malware fora have discontinued HijackThis as an initial check/removal tool, though they would probably analyse it for you with reluctance, many would insist that you follow their instructions/tools to fully check your system.

You could post it here as a zipped file or, if the site is still working, you could run an auto-analysis at hijackthis.de and post the link to your results, or get a screenshot of anything you’re not sure of and we’ll look into it.

      Satrow:
Thanks for your reply. I don’t think it’s infected. I was just curious after reading Fred’s article and following up on some of his links.

      I’ll try the hijackthis.de site 1st.

I just ran HJT on my W7x64 machine, most of the files ‘missing’ probably aren’t, HJT likely doesn’t have permissions for loaded Windows kernel/security -related files and calls them wrong.

I used HJT regularly until about a year ago but was finding it less useful compared to other tools such as AdwCleaner and JunkwareRemovalTool so discontinued using HJT.

Have just checked the HJT project page on Sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/ and the download is still v2.0.5. I downloaded v2.0.5 19 May 2014 so IMO HJT is now too old to bother with.
