Puzzling Error Message (XP SP2)

I’m trying to help a little old lady with her DSL webmai using Firefox. Every time she starts up Firefox pointing to her yahoo account a Windows pop-up appears stating “Windows cannot find …. dsl.sbc.yahoo.com. …” Then Firefox opens up with the dsl.sbc.yahoo.com page that Windows says it can’t find. I think this is a Windows problem and not something to do with Firefox. In fact, if I remember correctly it happens with Internet Explorer too. I can’t figure out why Windows pops that message up every time. It is simply an annoyance as she can close the error message and everything works normally after that.

Have you set up a Firefox shortcut which specifies a target webpage, perhaps?

Yes, what I meant was a shortcut to Firefox going directly to her Yahoo email page.

Chuck, you may have to set the shortcut to go to the default yahoo mail page, but not HER default mail page (i.e. yahoo.com/mail). If her login expires before FF is opened again, I could suspect that as a reason for the error.

The problem definitely resided with Firefox. I created the identical shortcut with Internet Explorer and the problem disappeared.

I suspect your problem is the one covered in Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file – Firefox. I quite frequently seem to need to take this action.
