When a user adds a group’s common Public Folder to their list of folders visible in their Outlook Today view – it does not show them in Outlook Today when that folder receives a new message. It will show any new messages to any folder on their own mailbox (Inbox, Drafts, etc.) but new messages coming into that public folder do not numerically appear in the Outlook Today window after they have added that Public Folder to their custom view there.

Is this by design? Do any of the rest of you use Public Folders to this extent that you can see if it behaves this way for you as well?

We are on a corporate Microsoft Exchange Server, running Outlook 2007.

(it works in Outlook 2003 — I just tested it on another machine I have not yet converted to 2007)

Okay – I’m going to attach a WORD document with screen shots to explain what I’m trying to say, and see if that helps.

What version of Exchange server? What service pack level?

In searching around I saw a work around that is to add the pulic folder to favorites then add it to Outlook Today. Still looking for some better explanation and to see if there is any permanent fix.

Well thanks, Joe! That’s a very useable workaround, and I tested it.

I wonder if that means it has something to do with how deeply buried the linked public folder is in the public folder directory structure. But I guess since it worked in 2003, that shouldn’t be the case.

There seems to be only one department in our company who is intent on using this Outlook Today view and shortcut (for most everyone else, I just add the folders to their Favorites List in the Mail view). So I will work with training them on how to add it to favorites and link it from there, and that should keep them happy for the time being
