I have a customer who has one file that I am a little concerned about. It is pstorec.exe, I know about the DLL file and pstores but I could not find anything on Microsoft’s site or from a general Google and AltaVista search on this particular file. The reason for my concern is there is a random lockup of the icons, the keyboard and mouse manipulate but clicking on icons is fruitless. Again this is “random”. I have done all of the virus, worm, trojan, spyware scans with multiple tools and nothing is coming up, the PC is cool and clean, temps of the CPU and box are well within limits and the power is steady and clean.
The location of the file, according to Windows Services, is C:WindowsSystem32 however I cannot find the file there or anywhere. I did turn on file extensions and “show all hidden files” as well as use the Windows search feature and drilled down by hand through several of the folders under the Windows directory.

It’s possible to have files that don’t show up at all in Windows XP. I remember reading somewhere that it was a combination of certain file attributes – sorry, can’t cite the source.

Try opening a DOS Prompt box, then do this:

      CD WindowsSystem32
      attrib pstorec.exe

See if the file is actually there.
