I appreciate your article on deep fakes, and especially the specific case you cited. And I certainly agree that we need protection against such. However, I am sure that deep fakes will be produced harming an innocent person, but where the provenance is also hidden.

Let’s suppose in the case you cited, that the teenage son of the athletic director was mad at his dad and decided to create and post the supposed recording, using his dad’s email or X account. At first the principal is blamed, then it is traced back to the athletic director, while the real perpetrator is still concealed.

One possible solution to this is a digital fingerprint, such that any on-line post must be accompanied by a digital fingerprint, but this would create its own problems. Personally, I am at the point that anything I see that may be inclined to fan the flames is likely to be false. This is even true if (or especially true if) the source is supposedly official. The bad actors attempting to manipulate us by deep fakes and similar fake news are sadly not limited to a few disturbed individuals.

Mr. Oppenheimer, thank you for an excellent article on AI deepfakes.  I just sent a copy to my sister who’s a retired judge.

      Best wishes in your endeavors,

Thank you Max Stul Oppenheimer, Esq. for this informative article about Deepfakes. It appears that we are living in very interesting times nowadays. This is not a good thing, and is quite scary actually. The McAfee Blog has a recent article Titled:
Are You a Victim of a Deepfake Attack? Here’s What to Do Next
      by Jasdev Dhaliwal – April 02, 2024 – 7 Minute Read
This article has some ideas about How to prevent deepfake attacks, and How to recover from a deepfake attack. This information may be useful, and is interesting to consider after reading your fine article. Also, the US government DHS has an interesting 43 page PDF Titled:
      Increasing Threat of DeepFake Identities
with an extensive 3 page End Notes Bibliography with multiple blue links to additional resources. I think it is more than a 7 minute read, but I did not time it while skimming the 43 pages. Keep up the good work Max, you are greatly appreciated by your fans at AskWoody.

I think AI has both a positive effect and some negative ones. It’s a guaranteed that the bad people will be trying to find ways to exploit it. All this AI has sort of exploded in a short time. Its going to take awhile to see how it plays out and what works and what doesn’t work.

I’d like to know why nobody who made threats was charged. It’s incredible how many people think they can get away with threatening others. Is that not as bad, or worse, than somebody potentially being racist? Not to mention the fact that I’m sure none of those people are perfect themselves –  as proven by the fact they feel that it’s okay to threaten others. Nowadays being innocent until proven guilty means nothing. Sad.
