I am not sure if this is posted on the correct board but I just have to say, everyone must get a firewall. This morning my DSL modem went to the funny farm cauldron and I am on dial-up disappointed until the replacement arrives. In my setup each computer is behind a router and a wireless access point and would almost never get an intrusion attempt. I use ZoneAlarm Pro in addition. In one hour on line with the dial-up direct without the router and access point I have had nineteen (19) attempts at intrusions from all over the world. It is enough to make you paranoid. Be careful out there.

The simple odds are that most of those are innocuous pings, and a large percentage of them turn out to be test pings somewhere along the backbone or at the NOC from your ISP. I would never for a moment disagree with you though that particularly if you are on a bb connection, you need a firewall, preferrably a hardware firewall to supplement any software you’re using for one.

Zone Alarm Pro lets you see the IP address as well as the company and person that owns and is responsible for it. Only two came from my ISP all the others from Korea, China, Austalia, Spain, Taiwan, and here in the US were from nobody I know or want to know.
