I am contemplating switching from IE 10 to IE 11, in the hope it may help with the problem of installing the IE cumulative update kb2909921, which will only install on one of the three Win 8.0 machines in the house, and the oldest one at that.

It seems that the only way to get IE 11 is to upgrade to Win 8.1, which raises issues of compatibility, apart from the fact that many people seem to dislike 8.1

The Upgrade Assistant lists three of my programmes which are incompatible and not needed – in fact Acronis 2013 was removed some time ago, so there is only a remnant somewhere. However, several of my programmes are not listed in either the compatible or incompatible lists, apparently due to MS not having enough information about them.

I would welcome info on whether the following will work in W8.1

    Macrium Pro
    Online Armor
    ClipMagic Lite
    Classic Shell.

With regard to Sharescope, essential to maintaining my standard of living, I can ring them tomorrow.

Having bought Macrium and Online Armor in December, it would be a blow to discover they will not work in 8.1.

      George,

Macrium Reflect Pro works just fine in Windows 8.1. HTH

      George,

Classic Shell also works great with Windows 8.1, as does all Start Menu replacements on the market. Just make sure you get the latest versions.

I’ve restored an 8.1 disk image using Macrium and it worked flawlessly. John

Online Armor works fine in 8.1, with one caveat on my computer, which I don’t know whether it is related to my hardware – I need to shut it down when I put the laptop to sleep or hibernation, in order to get it to wake without a BSOD.

Thanks guys. Just ClipMagic Lite or another clipboard replacement to go.

The ClipMagic web site says nothing about Windows 8/8.1 compatibility.

Make a complete backup of your 8.0 system before doing the upgrade. That way, if you don’t like 8.1, you can easily revert back to 8.0.

Personally, I didn’t like 8.1, but I’m very happy with 8.0. My backup allowed me to get back to 8.0 without skipping a beat.

George, I use the clipboard replacement called “Ditto” on Win 8.1 and Win 7. It takes a bit of study to figure out all the options, but it works great.

It is available from Sourceforge http://ditto-cp.sourceforge.net/

        I quite like Ditto too.
