Process remains after exiting program

Hi Folks:

I wasn’t sure exactly where to post this–I chose here simply because I’m still using XP.

I’ve noticed this problem with IrfanView (latest version), XNview (latest), and UltraEdit (10.10c; the problem doesn’t always occur with UE however).

If I open an image file in IrfanView (any format, any method–double-click, open with, etc.) and merely look at it, don’t manipulate it in any way, and then exit out of IV (either Esc or File | Exit), everything is fine. But if I do something to the image (resize, crop, etc.) and then exit out, the i_view32 process remains in memory and completely dominates the CPU (a CPU-use monitor reads 100%). If I don’t realize this right away and open and edit another image in IV, exiting leaves a second i_view32 process in memory and the whole system crawls until I kill the processes. This happens with XNview as well, and it sometimes happens with UltraEdit. Does anyone have any idea why?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Nope. I’m at work and our antivirus package is Trend Micro OfficeScan. I also have Windows Defender running. But this has been true for a long time (a few years) and the problem I described is relatively new (a few months).

That fact that the AV software is the same doesn’t really mean it isn’t causing this. Software updates and virus signatures can do that.

I would say that it is not easy to determine what causes it. Probably a first step would be to make sure you are running the latest versions of all the software that is hanging. Then start a process of elimination to see if anything conflicts with it. Probably the AV and other security software may be the starting point.

You can’t also excluded Windows security updates as a cause. I would likely search a bit to see if other users of the problematic software have experienced anything similar.

I have searched on the web for answers, and in other forums, but haven’t found any yet. I will continue. And I have the latest versions of the software (except UltraEdit, which is less problematic than the others).

I am sorry, I do not have any of the problematic programs installed. The only one that hangs from time to time is Outlook but with some patience, it usually ends on its own. When it does not, there no other option but kill it from Task Manager.

It is funny that the programs hanging in your computer are graphics programs, though. Were there any changes to your graphics adapters drivers? Do you have the latest version of these, obtained from the manufacturer?

I checked my graphics drivers over a year ago, but I just checked again and there was an update. I installed it but it didn’t solve the problem–IrfanView still hangs. To be clear: I can press Esc or click Exit from IV’s File menu and the window disappears as expected; it’s just the process (i_view32.exe) that fails to exit. And because the process monopolizes the CPU, I suspect it’s trying to exit but is being prevented by something. But I’m not a programmer, I really have no idea what’s happening.

It seems it’s not an isolated situation: http://en.irfanview-forum.de/vb/showthread/?137-Multiple-i_view32.exe-instances-remain-in-memory-after-exit. There is a solution pointed out in that thread. Have you tried it?

Yes, I saw that post earlier and the solution failed to work in my case. Thank you for checking though. I’ll revive that thread over there and see if anything turns up. Thanks again.
