I often use TechNet/SysinternalsProcess Explorer (ProcMon) because it’s more granular and provides more process information than Task Manager. However, whilst examining an issue recently with rampant CPU usage in Win 10 1803 I noticed an anomaly that I cannot explain. The anomaly is that the ‘Total’ CPU usage shown in ProcMon is often markedly different from that shown in Task Manager.

It’s not just an occasional difference… it’s a regular difference. Here’s some screenshots to show the issue in just one session. (As I hope the first screenshot shows clearly, each one was taken with the ProcMon and Task Manager windows butted together.)

Does anyone have any idea why the totals should often vary so much?
