Problems with printing Avery labels (template 5164)

Hello everyone,
super new to this forum. But Im glad I found it~

I have a wine store and we print labels for customers for their bottles.

The problem is when I print it, it leaves a white border around the label, which doesnt look good.
Maybe Im not doing something right or theres a problem with the printer…

I use: HP Laserjet CP 1025nw
: Avery Template 5164
: Word 2010

Settings: Labels
Letter size

The labels are 8.5 cm by 10.2 cm

Im not too snobby with these kind of things but because its for a customer, I have to make it right.

That issue seems to be typical of templates, see it in WordPerfect. If I have time I use Arts & Letters Express [formerly A&L Graphics Editor] and can put boxes on a page then paste the contents into each one. The ‘trick’ is in getting the boxes lined up with the labels, takes a few test prints to do it. A friend of mine got me into it over 20 years ago.

Hi foursons,

First make certain your printer has a small enough unprintable zone to be able to print to the edges of your labels.

If so, there are a couple of ways to address your issue depending on the nature of your customer’s label.

If you’re using a graphic and it’s not filling the cell, right-click in the label cell itself and choose Table Properties… Change the internal margin of the cell by clicking the Options… button in the lower right of the Table tab and setting the margins to 0.

If necessary, right-click the graphic, choose Size and Position… and change Text Wrapping from in-line to In front of text and size the graphic manually to fill or exceed the size of the label.

Or, you can set a fill color to the cell. Right-click in the cell and choose Borders and Shading… in the context menu. Click on the Shading tab and the color will fill the cell.

There might be other options, but without actually seeing the label, I can’t make a better suggestion.

Note, the official Avery templates are seldom helpful.
Try instead clicking on the Options button in the labels dialog.

Printing to the edge of the label is a function of your printer as well as the template. Most printers will not print to the edge.

One thing I noticed is that the label size is 8×10.2, standard letter ratio is 8.5×11, whether that’s the cause the borders I’m not sure,

Browni, the labels are in centimeters — a sheet of labels approximately 3.3 inches by 4 inches.

foursons, are you using WordPerfect or Word?

AFAIK, the Avery templates are of no use in Word. Instead, on the labels dialog click on the options button to change to the appropriate label.

This is not the place for a discussion of the relative strengths/weaknesses of Word and Word Perfect. Word will do what you want in this.

I got to playing around with WordPerfect X3 and discovered that when using Avery 5163 2″x4″ I could drag the label margins to nearly 0″. That still leaves the gutters and edges that don’t print.

WordPerfect has their own integration with Avery labels.

However, that alone is not worth switching horses midstream. Since you already have Word and, as Charles has pointed out Word will do exactly what you want, I suggest you stick with it.

Take a look at the steps outlined above and let us know what specific issues you’re having with them.
