    Hi,

I have an IBM Net Vista PC that has been given to us (as a donation of old IT equipment to a ‘worthy cause’). It had no operating system on it, and I have been trying to load Windows 2000.

I have started with the four disk boot set, and then use the CD. After the restart is when the problems begin.

I go past the starting Windows 2000 screen from which I can select Safe Mode. In the following screen, where there is no longer the safe mode option – but the screen is still black and white, the progress meter goes the whole distance to the right hand side of the screen. The next thing is the little ‘pst’ sound of a restart and the whole sequence starts again.

I can press F8 and go to the safe mode menu, but they are onot of much value as the operating system installation has not completed.

    Is there something easy?

Go to the IBM/Leveno website and download the critical BIOS update (this assumes that your NetVista is on the list). While you are there check for all machine specific drivers and download them and burn to a disc. The most important is the chipset and correct video drivers. But why stop there, audio, modem, ethernet, cardbus controller drivers, anything you can find and burn them to your new driver disc. Why are you using the boot floppies? It makes the process of installing go slower. Slap in the Windows CD and boot from the CD after the BIOS update is done.

I have a disk with all the drivers that I need, but my problem is that I cannot finish the Windows installation to get to the point where I can use that disk.

If you have done the CRITICAL BIOS UPDATE for the Net Vista from the Leveno/IBM website and still have this problem you may have detected the reason the computer was donated. I have found that these install issues are hardware based, most noteably video cards and ram. Good luck.
