• Problems with File History and Backup & Restore

I am having problems with both File History and Backup & Restore. I am not so concerned with the apps as I have software that works well. In fact, I did a system backup with personal software to my E: drive. I am more concerned with what else may be wrong. I have 3 hard drives: C: System (500GB SSD) – D: Files and Apps (1TB HD) – E: Backup (2TB HD). I have had a ton of problems after the 1809 update. Without going into too much detail, I had to use EasyRE to restore my boot capability. I am finally back to normal operation  except for the aforementioned noted problems.

I tried to setup backup and get the message to the effect that “cannot setup backup – internal server error, 0x80070057.” Windows could not find any backup devices which means it does not see any of the 3 hard drives. I tried to start File History and could not start it; I got the message “No usable drive was found, etc. error message 0x81000027.” I have searched the internet for a solution — there were many sites where I found instructions on changing the registry, windows services, and the like. Nothing has worked. I should note that I have done two windows reinstalls which made no difference. I have run SFC, chkdsk, DISM and more. I sincerely hope I do not have to do a clean install; the thought of reinstalling all my stuff is daunting. Thank you in advance for any help.

What procedure did you use to create the system image backup?
      — How long ago was that?
      — Upon completion is the system image backup destination file name listed on the 2TB HDD E: at that time?
While using your computer now, is the system image backup destination file name still listed on the 2TB HDD E: drive at this time?

      1. On 8/6 I used EaseUS (Free) Backup to make a system backup. It is on my E Drive.
      2. The drive is listed in my backups folder on drive E. As soon as I made the backup it showed up on E and it is still there.
      3. Specs: The computer was built by me: Asus Rog Strix B350 gaming; AMD Ryzen 5 1600 GPU; 16GB Crucial Ballistix memory; Professional 500GB SSD; Graphics AMD Radeon R7 360. (I’m not a gamer but the MB was on sale and I thought it would be more stable.)

      Thanks for responding.

Why not stick with EaseUS as you know it’s working?

To make a pseudo file history, create an incremental file backup and run it every hour.

      cheers, Paul

p.s. don’t forget to copy the backups to an external disk regularly and store the external disk away from the PC.

Thanks Paul. I know I can stick with EaseUS. But, I believe that things are supposed to work. My main concern is that if windows backup is bad, what other windows problems may be lurking around. There must be a solution to my problem but I just haven’t been able to find it. My E drive is connected internally at this time but when everything is squared away I plan to use my docking station for E and only plug it in when I need it. I am certainly not going to do a clean install of Windows and go through the hell of reinstalling all of the “stuff”  on the PC.

For every Windows build-in utility, like backup, uninstall, copy, A/V… there are x100 fold better 3rd party apps.

I believe Paul has provided valuable recommendations.

Here are some of my comments.
      Opening post #1905519
      — Some issues had to be addressed after the system image backup was created probably relative to the “problems after the 1809 update” followed up by the necessity to “to use EasyRE to restore my boot capability”.
      — “I am finally back to normal operation”
      — followed up by “except for the aforementioned noted problems.” based on “I am having problems with both File History and Backup & Restore.”

I use Macrium Reflect Free (MRF) and it has a reference Backup Definition File location on my C drive: C:\Users\***\Documents\Reflect\My Backup(X).xml.
      — You probably have something similar with your EaseUS (Free).
      — Possibly due to whatever problems were going on, maybe that would be a factor impacting the coordination on the backup location on drive E.
      — I’m not an expert on how these coincide with each other but that just came to my mind.

Create a new system image backup and see how it goes now that the computer is running fine.
      — I’m not familiar with how EaseUS (Free) works but I want to believe it’s doing its job.

I have MRF do the following
      — Verify file systems before backup
      — Verify image or backup file directly after creation is checked
      — Verify images before restoring
Upon completion of a system image backup, I also verify the USB Recovery disk works afterward.
      — It might take a little more time, but it’s worth it.

I’m not saying you have to do all of that but at least do a verification that applies via EaseUS (Free).

On “My main concern is that if windows backup is bad, what other windows problems may be lurking around.”
      — I’m not sure that the “if Windows backup is bad” is the case but I suspect it’s “other windows problems may be lurking around” that need to be investigated.
      — If you pursue that, you might want to have only the Windows drive C: System (500GB SSD) in place during that time.
      — If your motherboard diagnostics are available, check them out.

On “My E drive is connected internally at this time but when everything is squared away I plan to use my docking station for E and only plug it in when I need it” Great idea.

On “I am certainly not going to do a clean install of Windows and go through the hell of reinstalling all of the “stuff” on the PC.”
      — I hear you and I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that.

Thank you for your insightful answer, cmptrgy. I would have responded sooner but I was recovering from a major crash and just got everything back and working properly (I won’t bore you with the details.) Have you ever gone through one of those periods when nothing seems to go right? I’m in one of them now but I’ll pull out of it–I always do. I will take all of your suggestions to heart and will follow up on most if not all of them. For now I am going to take the advice all of you gave me, which is basically :Use EaseUS and forget about it. I have decided that I have spent way too much on this problem. Thanks again to all respondents. I am still amazed at the level of kindness shown by computer folks who donate their time and effort helping others.          elgercee
