what about patches from 28/4 and 12/5 such as kb957789,967642 and 963678 together with 2007 0ffice SP2 and associated help updates

    • #59662

Don’t apply them yet. Hold on for a few more days. There’s nothing absolutely pressing at the moment.

I guess I was the lucky one in the SP2 mess. I tried several times to install the SP2 package, but it failed each time. I have SP1 and it works ok for my use. Thanks Woody.

John, who has been making comments on my Vista SP2 blog, should read your latest blog, Woody about the problems with Vista SP2 and Kaspersky. John uses Kaspersky software and I don’t want him to suffer the problems with SP2 conflicting with Kaspersky.

Other kinds of security software not working correctly with Vista SP2 or falsely flagging the SP2 files or SP2 standalone installer files as malware or virus include BitDefender, BullGuard and WebRoot SpySweeper. If there are any Vista users out there using any of these products, do NOT install Vista SP2. Hold off the SP2 installation and obtain updates for these security software first.

Yep, that’s why I suggest EVERYONE hold off on SP2. We don’t yet know all of the problems….

      To All —

These problems are to be expected with any major overhaul of the Windows OS kernel. Even when/if the third-party security companies adapt to the new Vista SP2 landscape, when applying the Service Pack, I would suggest temporarily removing all security and media suite software, as these can wreck installation of any major Service Pack for any Microsoft Operating System.

This is why I would order the Service Pack on CD, if available in that form, rather than waiting a couple of hours to run the process on line. It’s worth the price of the “shipping and handling” charges.

Of course, this means staying off line while the Service Pack installs, then reinstalling your security software and media suite, and finally going back on line when everything is reinstalled.

That is how I updated to Windows XP SP3, and I had only one problem, as the installer took nearly forever to finish cleaning up. I think this was the point when the installer wanted to phone home, but it finished anyway, and I proceeded with the security reinstall followed by going on line to activate and register and update everything.

No other problems then or since. I suspect this will prove to be the case with Vista SP2, once the Antimalware Companies catch up with its new OS kernel restrictions. But do wait until this catch-up game is completed before installing SP2. I waited a long time before applying Win-XP SP3 and I have never regretted waiting.

I am sure Woody will keep us all posted on the progress with security conflicts and other gotchas in the new (Vista) Service Pack.

i installed it fine but ie is slower now then before so i can put up with it till they fix what it is slowing ie down or uninstall sp2

I foolishly installed Vista SP2. I’m experiencing some problems with Trend Micro Internet Security and IE 8 (I use Firefox when I can, but some sites won’t let me use Firefox).

      How can I uninstall SP2?

ESET has recently posted a solution to the NOD32 v4 problems and Vista SP2. Read this ESET KB article:

      Whoops. Disregard my previous comment.

      @John
Olsen: Are you using Trend Micro Internet Security 2009 (version 17)? Anything less than Trend Micro v17 is not compatible with Vista SP2. Read this Trend Micro KB article.

As for Kaspersky Internet Security [KIS] software, version 2010 beta seems to be compatible with Vista SP2 as noted in this kaspersky forum thread. So far the current version, KIS 2009, seems to be working okay with Vista SP2 as noted in this kaspersky forum thread

Kaspersky is the best Anti-Virus program i have ever used. it is way better than Mc Affe and Norton Antivirus.

Maybe this is why I had the intense memory leak problems after installing KIS 2010 on my Phenom desktop PC with Vista SP2 installed. I ran KIS 2009 previously and didn’t notice any problems, but after installing KIS 2010 my PC refused to run Matlab and would sometimes lock up running more than one browser at at time or a browser and email etc. I also noticed my CPU usage indicator pegging out nearly to 8 Gig RAM usew after running for a day. Uninstalling KIS 2010 and re-installing KIS 2009 seemed to fix the problem, but I still see the RAM use up around 4 Gig or more after running for a few days.
I contacted Kaspersky support, but the only suggestion they had was to make sure Norton or McAfee were uninstalled… Kaspersky is the only Antivirus program that was ever installed on my Phenom PC.
I also installed KIS 2010 on my HP Laptop Core 2 Duo. This one came with Vista SP2 pre-installed. It seems to work OK with KIS 2010 installed, but I’m always shutting it down and re-booting daily.
I will setup the sidebar and CPU Usage indicator on the laptop and let it run for a few days just to see how leaky the RAM is with KIS 2010 running on it.
Has anyone else noticed problems running KIS 2010 on a Phenom PC?

      Thanks,
      John

Kaspersky works better than Avg or Avast antivirus. Some viruses and trojan would not be detected by AVG but they are always detected by Kaspersky.

    • #59675

I always prefer to use Kasperky over Avast or McAfee. Kaspersky is much better in detecting new viruses and it does not consume too much resources on your dektop PC.

Kaspersky and Avast have much better heuristic detection capability compared to Trend Micro antivirus ,
