I am getting a problem with an installation onto a Win 2000 system. One dll is not registering and hangs the installation program. On a clean install of win2000 on a test PC it registers OK. If I use regsvr32 it will (un-)register other dlls but this one doesn’t exit but leaves a copy of regsvr32 running (visible with task manager). I have also tried to clean the registry with regclean. That gets part way through and then hangs.
I suspect i have a problem in the registry – are there any other tools on the web that will check and repair a win2000 registry.

What is the DLL? It sounds like you have more issues than just the DLL, if REGSVR32 is left running.

The first step in troubleshooting a Win2000 or XP installation is usually to run a repair by booting with the CD-ROM and following the on-screen prompts. It just might save your bacon.

        Thanks.
        It’s a crystal reports dll specifically craxdrt9.dll.
What gives me worries is that the installation works OK on a test PC with a clean install of win2000 and that the regclean hangs when I try it on the registry of this problem machine. As regsvr32 is writing registry entries that is my first thought that the registry is damaged.

It may well be the registry. Hard to say at this point. The repair process includes the registry though, so it’s worth a shot. If you aren’t too far into the build of the system, I’d be tempted to wipe it and start fresh, rather than go prematurely bald from troubleshooting it. I hate telling anyone else to do that, it’s a personal preference of mine – but I mention it because it may be more time-efficient.

This is on a users PC about 100 miles away. That limits me with my options somewhat as I make a modem connection and try to debug it remotely. Doing a win2000 repair from CD is a last resort.

For the registry I would like to try that first but as regclean fails ao you know of any other utility I can download and attempt a check/repair with.

take a look at jv16 power tools. It is pretty good and free for non-commercial use.

              Thanks – it’s pretty good.

I’ve used that, done a scandisk and defrag and a couple of reboots. It installs and registers now.
