    I opened a Excel file that was exported from Access as

    File name: F:AppsAccess2klqrShawMailingList2008
    Save as type: Microsoft Excel 97-2000 (*.xls)

    I’m trying to format the phone column

    Phone
    1112224444

    I’m trying for format the Phone column as Phone Number and I’m not getting the following desired formatting:

    Using Select Phone column
    Click Format, Cells…, Special, Phone Number

    However if I type in a new phone number I get the formatting
    (111) 222-4444

      Check you original formatting. I’m guessing it’s text and not a number. You have to set the formatting and then edit the cell to change it to the phone number formatting.

      You could highlight all of the newly formatted cells, open the immediate window in VBA and run:
      Selection.Value = Selection.Value

        After further review they were all text fields ‘1112224444

        Selection.Value = Selection.Value changed the column to numeric

        Then the Select Phone column
        Click Format, Cells…, Special, Phone Number

        worked as designed

        Thanks, John
