I have this .msi of Xmarks (a system of synchronizing bookmarks & favorites across machines). On the XP machines, it updates fine. On the Win 7 machine, it stops (after UAC approval) & says something like “system policies prevent this installation” (I could not copy & paste the results). I’m fairly convinced that either a (1) registry hack (preferred) OR a (2) method of running msiexec as administrator (although I am an administrator!) mode would fix the problem. (1) Not sure where/how in registry. (2) Msiexec seems to be a CMD mode, & I’ve tried it, but it keeps coming up with a display indicating I’m not doing it properly—how’s that for keeping me humble—I thought I was proficient in doing CMD mode like ipconfig, changing directories, etc.!

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody MVPOctober 14, 2010 at 12:03 pm #1249818Try running it manually on administrator mode.
1. Right click on Command Prompt and select Open as administrator.
2. Change to the directory where the MSI lives using the CD command. e.g. CD C:Temp
3. Type this command: msiexec /i xmarks.msi
I’m assuming the Xmarks MSI is called xmarks.msi.cheers, Paul

AskWoody MVPOctober 14, 2010 at 2:08 pm #1249861For future reference. Your user account is a member of the administrators group. Unlike with XP members of the the administrators group do not have the full rights that the builtin Administrator account has. That is why you need to run some installers and programs with “run as administrator”.
