When I try to install KB2894844 on my desktop (Win7 Pro, 64 bit) I get an error: “Windows Update encountered an unknown error.” I can’t install it either from downloaded files or via Win Update (3 tries for files and 2 for update). I ran MS’s Fixit but it didn’t! And Of course the error message is no help!

Since I update my desktop and my “patrol officer’s” laptop, I download the monthly files and sneaker net to her machine. Interestingly it installed on her laptop (Win home 64bit) without a problem.

Anybody have an idea what the problem is? (I tried MS tech support but it wasn’t worth the $$ charged).

As this is an update for .NET Framework 3.5.1 was it the .NET Framework Repair Tool Fixit you ran or the Reset Windows Update Components Fixit ?

      • #1468437

Well that didn’t work. Ended up “sending” a bunch of files to MS fro further examination. I really don’t expect a response from MS.

It was the Fixit that showed up during the troubleshooting process from Update. I’ll try the one you mentioned.

I linked two Fixits and did you leave the .NET Framework Repair Tool running while you retried the update ?

Yep! I ran the .NET Fixit. I think I’ll do a win repair after reboot.

Before you go that far open a command prompt as an admin and enter sfc /scannow to see what that reports.

Event Viewer may have more info on the “unknown error”

Something else to try – re-registering the Windows Installer –

Go Start > type msiexec /unreg and press enter

Go Start > type msiexec /regserver and press enter then try the WU again.

      sfc scan found no problems
Unregistering and re-registering Win Installer didn’t fix the failing install.

Event viewer doesn’t show anything related to the attempted install.

While you aren’t getting the error code in this article http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/976982/en-us give the fixit a try or any of the other steps that you haven’t tried as listed in the article.

I have an in depth article somewhere for fixing WUs but having trouble locating it at the moment but will post it when found.

This isn’t the one I was looking for but I have a few 🙂 http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-updates-fail-to-install

The Fix WU tool re-registers all of WUs components but the Catroot2 procedure can be useful and locating the WindowsUpdate.log should at least give a better error code than the obscure unknown error – hopefully.

Shooting off now as it’s getting late.
