Hi, my wife’s old Dell tower system has been happily running Windows 10 Home 64bit Version 1511 Build 10586.633!! Yes, I know, it should have been updated before.

Windows Update and wushowhide return no results, so I downloaded the latest Fall Update file:
    windows10.0-kb4019473-x64_c23b6f55caf1b9d6c14161b66fe9c9dfb4ad475c.msu

After over an hour and a half running without any other app it was still saying searching for updates, so I cancelled it.

There was some regular svchost activity: small but regular disk reads and writes plus 25% cpu (it’s not a very powerful processor).

Was I incorrect to cancel? If so, how long should I wait?

I could not see any obvious sign why Windows Update should not work so I guess I need to look deeper. I just don’t know where. What can anyone suggest?

For Win7 or Win8.1, to install a .msu file, we have first to stop the WU Service.
      Reboot the computer.
Control Panel\Administrative Tools Services – highlight WUService. click on “stop” on the top left, then install the standalone installer.
I’m not familiar with that version of Win10, but I assume you knew to try this?

Hi PKCano. no, I haven’t tried that as my experience on my Win 10 Pro 64 but laptop is that WU Offline files install OK.

It is worth a try though, so thanks for that.

      Update:

I have found a couple of Microsoft links to WU problems.

I tried DISM which completed OK, and SFC likewise.

The ‘reset windows update components’ instruction I found looked scary!

The offline update still sits there ‘looking for updates’.

John, are you connected to the internet when this happens? It might be worth trying to disconnect and try again, if you are.

Kirsty, Yes I remain connected when I try.

I use this technique (timing driven by Woody) to download updates for my laptop, currently on Anniversary Update, and it updates successfully while still connected.

It is worth trying though, thanks.

      OK,

      So far no luck.

The system is an older Dell Inspiron 645.

Update History (after update from Windows 7 Home).

      First update Windows 10 KB3106246 on 18th May 2016
      Last two updates:
      Windows 10 KB3150513 14th October 2016 and
      Flash Player KB3201860 28th October 2016.

Windows Update, and wushowhide return nothing – not completing.
Attempts to load kb4019473-x64……msu end up searching for updates (for ever, well a really long time.)
Can anyone point to a reason why Updates are not found?

I’ve thought that maybe a RESET keeping files may help.

Alternatively, can I use the Windows 10 Build 1607 Recovery Drive I created for my laptop to install over the existing Build 1511. Will this refresh the Registry? What files will I need to keep manually? (eg Firefox setup)

      Any other suggestions please?

      John

Hmmmm. Try downloading a later servicing stack and manually installing it. The latest is probably better if it will install. Sept 2016 is KB3181403 32-bit or 64-bit or the later April 2017 KB4015220 32-bit or 64-bit

Stop the Windows Update Service (leave the window open). Install the servicing stack. Reboot.
Stop the windows Update service (leave the window open) Try installing the cumulative update again.

The Recovery Drive you created for the laptop – was that like an OEM Recovery Disk. If so, it will contain the drivers and disk layout for the laptop, may not work on the old Dell. If you are talking about an Install Disk created from the downloaded ISO, that would work.

The files you will need to save are under the User’s ID (everything). Go into Folder Options in the Control Panel and “show hidden files” (not protected system files). The personal settings for a lot of programs are in the AppData folder. Firefox settings are AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<an alphanumeric string>\ and AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<an alphanumeric string>\.

If I were you, I would go ahead and upgrade to 1607. It is stable now and you won’t have to keep fighting 1511, with it’s EOL this fall anyway.

      Thanks PKCano,
The recovery drive is standard Windows 10 USB Recovery Drive Including System files!
Can this be used to update from 1511 to 1607?

Failing that what other methods are there to install 1607 over 1511 in my situation?

I’m still not following “standard recovery drive”.

The first scenario is: you get a new laptop. After the initial setup, the s/w suggests you make a Recovery USB. You stick the Flash drive in the laptop and it creates the recovery USB. – What you have in this case is an image of the laptop and it is not usable on the Dell because it is the OEM setup for the laptop.

The other scenario is you download the Creation Tool from MS and create the USB with the installer for a generic version of Windows 10. This is not an image of the laptop (does not contain the OEM install) and can be used on any computer. This then is an installer and does not contain the drivers, partitions, system as set by the OEM on the laptop.

I think you can download the Anniversary Edition here
        https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO/
Or better, link (at the top) to the Download Center and download the media creation tool.

I read that the Media Creation Tool will give you CU1703. Better stick with the ISO. If it calls for a clean install, instead of “save your files” you should have the User folder backed up. You should make an image of the computer before you start in case the install fails so you have something to go back to.
        64-bit ISO is 4.38GB, 32-bit is about 1GB less.
