• Problem installing from CD ROM

Hi! I hope someone can help me out of this jam….

I just recently upgraded my PIII pc with a cd rom (a TEAC CD 224E, to be exact). It was completely plug & play, no drivers, no software, no nothing.

Yesterday I tried to install a program on my pc. The error message I get is “Setup file is linked to missing export Version.dll.” I have also gotten “Device attached to the system is not functioning” and a single “Kernel32.dll” error.

I have verified that the disc is fine, as it will install properly on 2 other machines. The CD ROM _appears_ to be working: I can explore the cdrom, run a program from the cd rom, and open a file (pdf, doc, html) from the cdrom. I have tried running Setup for a different program and got the same variety of errors.

So, basically, it seems like the setup of a program is the problem. But is it a cdrom problem or an OS (Win98SE) problem? Does anyone know of a solution? I’ve been all over the MS web site and the web and can’t seem to find this exact problem….

Any helps or hints are HIGHLY appreciated!

    Cecilia 🙂

What is the program you tried to install? If the drive seems to work OK, I would imagine it’s not the drive and I can’t imagine it’s a Win98 problem. Seems like it might be the program you’re trying to install.

I thought of that, too, since I can “explore” the cd with the drive. I tried installing two different things: one was the drivers for a cordless mouse, the other was WinFaxPro. Both give similar errors. I can install both on a different pc, which leads me to think that it’s not the disks.

Added information: I also tried uninstalling/removing the drive and reinstalling. According to TEAC (maker of the drive), there are no drivers for this drive at all. I checked driverguide.com and found a single driver that did nothing for this drive.

The only reason I thought it might be a Win98 problem is the Kernel32.dll error that I got. But it doesn’t seem likely because Win98 didn’t have any problems before this drive. But since it’s a driverless drive and I can explore and open files from it, how can it be the drive?

        I’m so lost….

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 13-Jan-04 17:04. to add information about sfc)

I don’t know if this will help, but you can repair some registry errors by booting to a DOS prompt (not a DOS window) & then typing:

          smartdrv.exe 8196 16
          scanreg /fix /opt

& pressing enter after each line. Windows will rebuild the registry.

You can also check for corrupt DLL files by running the System File Checker:
          Start/Run & type

          sfc

& press enter. This will allow you to restore corrupt files, if any, from your Win98 CD-ROM.
          Hope this helps,

Well, I tried the whole system file checker thing. I replaced a number of dlls, some of which apparently are not on my Win98SE cd (gdi32.dll, setupx.dll, kernel32.dll). I’m still getting the Kernel32.dll error (The setup.exe is linked to missing export kernel32.dll). I didn’t know about the registry fix thing but will try later today.

At this point, I’m pulling my hair out and considering just reinstalling the OS. Uggggh.

Please post back on how you make out with Phil’s suggestion. It sure sounds like something messed up in the Windows installation, rather than the drive. I wonder if one way to test that theory might be to copy the entire contents of a CD that you’re trying to install, to a temporary folder on the hard drive? Then you could try running the SETUP.EXE from that temp folder to see if it also fails. (assumes you’ve got space on your drive)

If it worked until you installed a new piece of hardware, it seems a strong indication that the hardware is not working properly. If you recently purchased it, take it back and exchange it for a new one. If both do the same thing, then I would think it was not playing nicely with other hardware components. But at the very least you have confirmed that it is not a problem with the CD drive itself.

Hold off on reinstalling Windows 98. It may well do nothing, and should be held off for a last resort.
