I don’t know what’s caused this but when I click on “C:” in My Computer this triggers a specific setup.exe file for a program which was installed, trialed and removed using the add/remove program in control panel. Also file associations seems to be scrambled. Anyway, the only way to open C: drive is to right click and select open. Yet using windows explorer does not cause this problem. I would appreciate some help on this. BTW Nortons antivirus is installed on this PC although it does not show up as an installed program in the add/remove program in control panel. Is this yet another Nortons issue?

My first thought is to check for the presence of an AUTORUN file on drive C. If there is one there, temporarily rename or move it, and see if that helps.
