I’m sure you can do this somehow but I can’t remember how and I can’t find it either – how do you tell the printer you want it to print the coloured background/white text of a presentation exactly like that, rather than the white background/coloured text it changes it to by default?! In Powerpoint 97, that is!

    Many thanks in advance!

I don’t have PP97 to test on, but does it help if you clear the “Black & white” and “Pure black and white” check boxes in the lower left corner of the File | Print… dialog?

Hi Hans, thanks for that, but those boxes were cleared already (or the other elements of the page wouldn’t have printed in colour either!).

In fact, I think my problem is in reverse – having just picked up my first print, the backgrounds *have* printed, so now I just need to work out how it was we used to get the printer to print everything *except* the background (I think this was an ink-saving measure originally)!

I’ve just tried it after clearing a box marked ‘background printing’ in the options – I thought this was to do with whether the machine would print in the background while you got on with something else or would insist you waited while it finished, but maybe not!

I’ll let you know how it comes out!

Edited to add: no, it didn’t make any difference, I think I was right first time about that box! So now I need to know how to print *without* the background, instead!

“Background printing” in the Print tab of Tools | Options… means that you can go on working while a presentation is being printed; it has nothing to do with whether slide backgrounds will be printed or not.

So I was right the first time, then.

Now I just have to work out how to get it to print *without* the background – I’m sure I’ve seen this, where the print of a dark slide with light text was effectively reversed to print dark text with a light (or non-existent) background, but can I find where to set this …?! Can I heck!

            sigh

Isn’t that what “Pure black & white” does?

            • #939545

Maybe, but I don’t want it black & white! I want it in colour but reversed – I’m sure I’ve seen that before!

Are you choosing slides or handouts in the print dialog? I think “slides” print with complete fidelity to the originals, while “handouts” print in reverse. But you should compare because I always use dark backgrounds and PPT might improvise in other cases.

Good idea, Jeff, but when I tried it slides and handouts printed exactly the same! Well, apart from the number per page, of course.

              sigh

You would have to apply a new color scheme to the presentation in order to do this. There’s no print setting that would print colors “reversed” in this manner.
