AskWoody PlusJune 13, 2001 at 12:01 pm #529319The first thing you might do is go to the web sit for the brand of labels that you have and see if they have a template for those labels for Excel.
I currently print labels from data in Excel by exporting the data to a .CSV file and then importing that into the Avery LabelPro software for Avery labels. That allows me to quickly change label sizes for different applications.
If those fail, then I have printed lables directly from Excel by the rather laborious process of adjusting cell sizes until they match the positioning of the lables. That takes a while, but it does work.
I am also pretty sure that Avery has templates for their lables for Word if they don’t have them for Excel. You might also be able to use those and link to the data in Excel.

AskWoody LoungerJune 13, 2001 at 3:34 pm #529346I have the same problem – data in Excel that I want to use to print labels, and I have found it easiest to export the data to Word and then use the Word mail merge tools to print off labels. Word (at least Word2K) has templates for most common labels, and allows you to specify a custom template if you are using ones it is not already set up for. I don’t know whether you can save the custom label format, although it would have been a sensible feature for MS to include (insert MS joke here!).

Dean, are you exporting from Excel first?
To implement Legare’s suggestion about linking, in Word
use Tools>MailMerge>MailingLabels>ActiveWindow>GetData>
OpenDataSource(specify excel spreadsheet in file type box)>Set Up Main Document…AFAICT, the only difference between the “Details…” and “New Label…” buttons in the resulting Label Options dialog box is that the LabelName box is blank (they both let you manipulate and save nine label parameters for the currently selected label type).
Although I’ve encountered some Avery Labels that aren’t templated in Word 2K, Avery label packages usually include instructions on how to enter the specifications in the Label Type Box.

AskWoody LoungerJune 16, 2001 at 11:45 pm #529770Hi Mark
You asked if I was exporting the data from Excel before using it in Word – I am, just by copying the entire “database” in Excel, then pasting it into word. I didn’t know that you could use an excel file as the data source for a mail merge, though, which is what I started to do with the data anyway. I will probably do it that way from now on, since Excel is my ‘native tongue’ in Windows Apps
