Once again, a Windows update messed up my printer access, (Epson WF-3520).  As soon as the update was finished I wanted to print a document but finding no printer installed and the print spooler not running and switched to “manual.”  I manually switched on the print spooler, deleted the printer in the device manager, and manually reinstalled the Epson printer. Voilà, I once again have a printer.

I then updated my Windows 11 Pro installation to 22H2 – same thing – no printer access.

On another Window 10 Pro update everything went smoothly, no printer, printer settings, or print spooler were touched.

    I’m baffled.

no such problems with the Windows 10 2022 (22H2) update on my relative’s old Dell Inspiron desktop PC and using an Epson WF-2760 printer connected thru a local USB cable 🙂

I can print docs & pictures with the WF-2760 just fine and all the printer settings work as expected

be even more “baffled” as to why someone else is having printer problems with 22H2 and I am not

I have had a similar issue with my Kodak 5300 AIO printer.  Immediately after the install of KB5018410, there is no communication with the printer…cannot print nor even open printer settings.  Immediately post uninstall, all works fine.  In addition, I have found that KB5018482 and KB5020435 have the same result.  I have them blocked for the moment, but I do hope things get sorted.  I would have uninstalled the drivers and the printer and then attempted a new printer and software install, but sadly Kodak has only ever had an online installer that is no longer accessible.  While I have a half dozen copies of the installer, it cannot communicate with the Kodak website anymore rendering them useless.  The printer works fine.

RPC connection updates for print in Windows 11

Windows 11, version 22H2 introduces changes to print components that modify how Windows machines communicate with each other during printing or print related operations. For example, the changes come into effect when you print to a printer shared out by a print server or another computer on the network. These changes were made to further improve the overall security of printing in Windows…

For print related communications, by default, RPC over TCP is used for client – server communications.

Using RPC over Named Pipes for print related communication between computers is still available but is disabled by default.
Using RPC over TCP or RPC over Named Pipes for print related communication can be controlled by Group Policy or through the registry.
By default, the client or server only listens for incoming connections via RPC over TCP.

The Spooler service can be configured to also listen for incoming connections via RPC over Named Pipes. This isn’t the default configuration.
This behavior can be controlled by Group Policy or through the registry.

I am familiar with the changes in Windows 11, however I have Windows 10 in my case. Group Policy lacks an entry for such a change in Windows 10 as far as I can tell.

If anyone knows what changes to make in a Windows 10 system, I would be very appreciative.
