Just purchased a simple mono laser printer, Samsung ML 1865.

Installed the software from the CD and was able to print immediately.

However, with each print job, I get an error message: “Printer Status Monitor has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

Is this a Samsung problem or a Windows problem, and how would I solve it? (Running Windows XP Version 5.1, Service Pack 3).

      J,

The first thing I would do is check the Samsung website for driver software updates. You don’t know how long that machine was “on the shelf”. There may already be an update to fix the problem.

Took your advice and downloaded recent (Jan. 11) driver from the Samsung site, but I still get the same error message when I print.

      J.,

If the printer is working OK maybe you could just disable the Status Monitor. You could use a free program like AutoRuns or if it is listed in the MSConfig Startup tab you could just uncheck it and reboot.

Don’t see it in the Startup list in msconfig, although I’m not sure what it would be called.

Is the Status Monitor a Windows program or a specific Samsung program?

I’m not sure. I typed Status Monitor into the Start Button Search Box and got the attached. I then right clicked it and got the properties and it appears to be a Brother program for my Brother laser printer.

Had the same issue with a Samsung ML-2525W. (s/w laser)
Went to the Samsung support page, there is a “Universal Printer driver”, downloaded, installed.
Then the driver will normally find your printer (independently of a location in a network or local)
Choose it as your standard, save and exit , now the error message never appears, all is fine

I have an Epson ML-2525 that did the same thing. The .WER files pointed to ssp4msm.exe v1.1.0.12. I found a solution for mine at Microsoft Answers.

I used the answer from Scorpio4317. It mentions turning off your anti-virus. I did not have to.
