• Printer Preference Saved (2003 SP2)

If a Word document is saved after printing, it appears to save the printer choice in the document. Is this true? If so, is there a way to override this so that the document, by default, prints to the Windows default printer? That is, I print to a non-default printer, then save the document. The next time I open the document and print, I want the Windows default printer to be the default printer selection for this document.

    Thanks.

No, as far as I know Word doesn’t save the printer choice with the document. If you print to a specific printer, that printer will remain the active printer until you quit Word or until you select another printer. Next time you start Word, the default printer will be the active printer again.

I agree with Hans. In my experience, Word relies on the default printer every time that Word is opened but will remember a different printer if you change this during a session. If you use Word as your Outlook email editor then you ‘may’ need to also close Outlook but otherwise any time you close Word (not just the document), your printer will revert to default.

The document is completely ‘printer agnostic’ and relies only on Word’s preference.

        Hans & Andrew,

Thanks – certainly a more rational explanation for the behavior I was observing.
