I have Win98SE and for some reason yesterday it started to freak out and it has something to do with the printers folder. System hangs if I go into it and I have to hit CTR-ALT-DEL to see that “NOT RESPONDING”. Then I close it down and then the START button won’t work? Is there a way to do a soft reinstall of Windows98? Thanks in Advance!

There is a way to do a soft (refresh?) install of Windows.

Have you tried removing/reinstalling the printer? How about with newer drivers? If you have more than one printer installed, do they work as expected?

      Thanks,

No, the laptop works fine at home with a network printer..it’s just at work with this XP box that seems to be the problem….any further ideas

Do you have the correct drivers for the two different printers?
Do you have a network at work or is it a local printer?

Couple of things you can do:

1 – Use the system file checker to see if any system files are corrupted or missing
2 – Run at least two different registry cleaners – I have found that one finds things that the other does not find. I have used System Mechanic, RegVac, and Advanced Registry Optimizer with good results. Google on them and you will find the download links.
3 – Go to Google and get Aida32…it will tell you alot of things about your system, processes, etc.

      Edited to add:

4 – Make sure you have a good anti virus program and check your system with current virus definitions!
