I need to print out a list of folders and files from windows explorer. I can’t find a way to do this. I have found a few downloads from the internet that will allow me to print out the directory but it will only show the folders, but not the files within the folders.

    Any recommendations

Go to http://www.karenware.com/powertools/powertools.asp%5B/url%5D and download the “Directory Printer ” program. If you do NOT have “Visual Basic Runtime v6.0” make sure that you read the note at the bottom of the above linked page.

This will do what you want and a LOT more.

Amen to that suggestion! Dirctory Printer is a very powerful tool, and Karen Kenworthy’s programs are almost unfailingly stable – at the right price: free

Not to detract from Karen’s excellent utility, but I might add that if you use Outlook you can easily print a directly listing by opening My Computer from the Task Pane/Bar, navigating to the folder of choice and clicking print. The print layout can be customized ad infinitum using Customize current view.

There may be times when you want to do this but can’t use a utility for it. It can be done quickly and easily in DOS (at the DOS prompt). If you want the directory to be printed to a file called woody, type at the dos prompt: c:>dir > woody

In the c directory folder, you’ll find the text file named woody that will contain your directory. If you want to include subdirectories, use the switch /s. If you want the resulting file to be in numeric and/or alpha order, include the switch /o (the letter o)

So if you want to document a floppy in the a-drive alphabetically and call the file woody, type a:dir > woody /s/o

This method will NOT print out the LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG file names

When I’ve used this in the past, the names/details of files look like this:

          FORMER~1 XLS 23,040 12-23-00 11:13a former addresses.XLS
          NEWZEA~1 DOC 78,848 01-23-01 12:24p new zealand B&B.doc

While the file name is truncated on the left, the complete file name is at the end of the line, on the right. In this example, the name of the first file is: former addresses.XLS. If you want only file names, (this is easiest when first changing the font to courier) hold the alt key (to select a column of info) while highlighting whatever part of the file details you don’t want, then select delete. An extra step, but an easy one.

BTW, when I posted my previous message, I thought I was in the win98 forum, so I don’t know if this works in win2000 or not. Sorry.
