• Preview Pane VulnerabilityI (OE5.50)

I am running OE 5.50 on a Windows 95 PC. I am told that if I view an e-mail in the preview pane it is vulnerable to virus and worm infection such as W32.magistr. It is impossible to delete a message without seeing it in the preview pane. Is there a patch to fix this? I have searched the MS KB without success.

Puzzling. I never view messages in the preview pane. If I recognize the sender, I open the message. If not, I just click once on the from/subject line, click delete, and it’s gone.

if you have all the latest IE patches, you’re safe – also, make sure that OE is viewig mail in restricted zone and that everything active is disabled n that zone. look on the security tab in tools > options.

Yes, I am viewing in the restricted zone, but what do you mean by “everything active is disabled in that zone”?
Two days ago I received an e-mail with two attachments, one of which had the W32.Magistr virus. NAV alerted me and I deleted it. However, a local friend rang me to say I had sent it to him and that everyone on my address list would also have been sent it. I have checked with several others locally, none of whom received it. Very strange!

See my reply in this earlier thread.

After the Preview Pane is closed, to safely check on the authenticity of an email, right click on it in the Message List, click Properties, click the Details tab and then the Message Source button at the bottom of the window. Sender details and text can then be viewed and as it is in mime code there is no danger of virus infection. If satisfied the email can then be opened from the Message List: if not it can be deleted.
