    Hello folks,

    I have not posted here that often since most of your expert advices have been a great help to address issues but the files in C:windowsprefetch were deleted unintentionally about 10 days ago and NO layout.ini file has been recreated since then. Search of several sources indicates said file is an essential file to speed loading process but, I just do not know why it is not recreated and what prevents it to be created.

    Is this file really necessary? If so, how do I make it to regenerate itself? There are about 20 prefetch files in the folder but, no *.ini file.

    Any recommendation is greatly appreciated.

    Regards

      Is this file really necessary?

      No, but, in Windows XP you’ll need all the help you can get & prefetching IS a big help.

      Windows XP should create it’s own layout ini file after it learns your startup routine, usually 72 hrs at worst. (dependent upon how rigorous your system is being used)
      Be cognizant of what needs you have in task scheduler as it will be a big factor.
      ___________________________________________

      Either command will attempt to rebuild Layout ini file;

      rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

      %windir%system32Rundll32.exe Advapi32.dll, ProcessIdleTasks

      Reboot your computer, be aware that it may take up to 72 hrs to finalize everything, rebooting multiple times may speed that process up.
      You may also need to tweak, disable, or re-enable what , if anything, you have running in task scheduler.

      Thanks for the information and instruction.

      Command to rebuild has been entered and will give it 3-4 days to see what happens. Even though I have not mentioned it before but as always, your contribution throughout the forum is greatly appreciated. I have used YOUR comments in several cases to address issues. Thanks

        Don’t forget that for prefetch to work in XP, the scheduler service has to be running.

          Thanks for the info. In fact the ini file was rebuilt and seems OK.
