A user in my office is unable to open PowerPoint. When she tries to open it, the splash screen shows for a moment, the hard drive continues to run, with the little hour-glass showing by the pointer, and then nothing. Taskmanager shows that powerpoint is running, but nothing comes up on the screen. The last thing she remembers doing before this happened is try to open a 2 MB powerpoint file.

I tried running Detect and Repair, but it didn’t help. How can we get the program on the screen?

      Fafner,

I use PPT2000 regularly and have had this is the past. The ranges of file sizes that I work with go up to 12MB and sometimes higher. Usually, in the past, all I have had to do is shut down my computer for a few minutes and restart. That has corrected the problem for me. I believe that sometimes PPT does not release from memory until a reboot is accomplished, nothing I do to restore the program is successful.

Thanks for your reply. I have rebooted several times since this first occurred, and it doesn’t help.

What, if any, error do you get?

          • #590763

I get no error message at all. As described in my first post, I get the flash screen for a second, then nothing. Taskmanager then says powerpoint is running, but there is nothing on the screen.

              Try this.

Well, I tried the suggestions in the KB article, but no luck. I deleted the recent file list from the registry, but it doesn’t help. Same non-opening behavior from Powerpoint. That is, although Task Manager says it is open, I have nothing on the screen. I have also found on this user’s machine that Excel and Word don’t open either, but with these the behavior is a little different. They start to open but never completely open. Rather they hang with most of the toolbars displayed but with no document open and the hour-glass pointer showing. Only way to shut them down is with the task manager. With word I tried renaming normal.dot, but that doesn’t work, nor clicking on a backup normal.dot. I can open Word with the /a switch, but I can’t open Excel at all. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office, but no luck.

Perhaps I should repost on General Office Solutions forum, since this seems to be a bigger problem. Although the behavior of Powerpoint is different from that of Work and Excel. By the way, Outlook and Access open just fine.

              Help!
