Hi. I’ve somehow lost the go to sleep option from START/SHUTDOWN. I’m using W98SE. Does anyone know how to get them back please? Even some information about where it may be hiding or what I may have done to frighten it away would be useful. TIA… Fay

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 6, 2001 at 8:26 pm #1777804The option is missing from the very last dialog that you see?
The choices that you see there are controlled by registry entries – more precisely they are usually limited by the registry, or system policies.
Have you changed anything in the BIOS, such as disabling ACPI?
You could also go and do a SCANREG /RESTORE from a command prompt, but this would depend on how long ago this started happening. The registry is automatically backed up once a day, every successful startup, and by default 6 copies are kept.
Most important Fay, do you remember anything that has changed….new software installed, hardware added or removed, etc?

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 6, 2001 at 10:16 pm #1777818I have seen the Standby option disappear before, if that is the case, see the following:

Found on the Win 98 CD in ToolsMtsutilPmtshootPmtshoot.ExeDescription of the Power Management Troubleshooter Tool
This article describes the Power Management Trouble Shooter tool
(Pmtshoot.exe). Pmtshoot is a tool to assist you in identifying
the program or device driver that is preventing your computer from
entering a standby (or suspended) state. Pmtshoot monitors your
computer when it suspends, and tries to identify programs or device
drivers that may prevent your computer from suspending.

If the Suspend option doesn’t work as it should, or you simply want
to remove the option from the Start Menu, then use this tweak.Open your registry and find the key and value below.
Change the value of ‘APMMenuSuspend’ to equal ’00’, restart the
machine and the suspend option should have disappeared.Registry Settings:
Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEEnumRoot*PNP0C050000]
Value Name: APMMenuSuspend

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2001 at 7:44 am #1778471A couple of ideas.
1. Right click your desktop & choose Properties/Settings tab/Advanced.
2. On the monitor tab, is it energy start compliant & are the other boxes checked (Plug & Play, suspend)?
3. Under Screen Saver/Settings, are there options for standby? Finally, run msconfig/startup tab. You should have two entries for LoadPowerProfile.
Run regedit:
1. Under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun, do you have an entry for LoadPowerProfile? The value should be:
Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme
2. Under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunServices, you should also have an entry for LoadPowerProfile.Back up the registry before making any modifications
Hope this helps.
