I am working with an older IBM Thinkpad running 98SE. When I have attached an external Numeric Keypad (from Targas) in the PS/2 port, I get a POST error, indicating a stuck key. I have flashed the bios of this laptop (390). If I start the laptop without the numeric keypad attached, it boots fine and if I plug the keypad in afterwards it will recognize it. But, I would like to be able to keep it in all the time and be able to shutdown and restart with out the POST error. I have no such problems with my 2000 laptops. Any suggestions?

Since it is a POST error, Win98 is in the clear.
Try this URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/us/%5B/url%5D
Click on Thinkpad
This will put you on the right track.
If nothing looks promising, use the search box in the Thinkpad section and enter Stuck Key
This will take you to specific error messages and solutions.
Good luck,

AskWoody LoungerNovember 1, 2002 at 11:06 am #628304Of course, it wouldn’t be a win98 issue….’brain was out to lunch! Well I did peruse the IBM support site for an hour or so yesterday and no luck.I had hoped updating the bios would help, but didn’t. I’m thinking perhaps the keypad is defective. I’ll test it more at work today. thank you for your feedback.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 1, 2002 at 6:42 pm #628452I believe most Bios have an option that’s something like Halt On: with options like Keyboard, and a few others.. (My brains been out to lunch for a LONG time) Anyways, go through each of the options.. you should be able to change this Halt On: to None. Which would allow the system to boot even with a keyboard not present.
Since it’s a laptop, it doesn’t really make logical sense that the thing would Halt on keyboard anyways, but hopefully you’ll find an option like this upon closer inspection.
HTH!
