Are you telling us that you do NOT use any sounds?

Are your hurting for “Disk space”?

frownNono..not hurting for disk space at all…MerC had mentioned that I should check on all the .wav in my os(WinME)…to see if I had any problems with them.
My question was: do I need to have all of these .wav still in my os if I don’t use screensavers (and the goodies that go with them)? I can live with them..was just wondering, that’s all.
I use sounds for email, etc. I don’t use my speakers at all…have a headset instead, so when and if I decide to use my headset, then I hear sounds…otherwise – my computer just runs and the monitor runs, but I don’t hear anything at all. laugh
So, I guess I don’t have to worry about the wav…
      Thanks for replying.

Of course, you can uninstall unwanted stuff, but be careful – you mention that you haven’t installation CD, so be sure, that you have all .cab files on your hard drive (usually in C:WindowsOptionsCabs; in WinME it must be at least from Precopy1.cab to Win_22.cab).
If you decide to remove unwanted stuff, double-click My Computer, then Control Panel, then Add-Remove Programs, then click Add-Remove Windows Components. Uncheck unwanted components (screen savers, sounds, etc) click Next and follow instructions on the screen. To install components, use the same procedure (you can be prompted to insert installation CD).
        Good luck!

        • #539249

hello I have already uninstalled all screensavers via the Add/Remove Program…but why are the *.wav sounds for these screensavers still listed in my OS?
I have ‘recovery’ CDs, plus the /CAB data on my HDD…so I don’t have to worry.
          shrug

          • #539256

I have seen you associate .WAV files with ScreenSavers in two or three messages in this thread. I just want to make sure that you know that .WAV files have nothing whatsoever to do with ScreenSavers. .WAV files are sound files (double click on one) that play the sounds that your PC makes. Deleting ScreenSavers should not delete any .WAV files (unless you are using third party ScreenSavers that make sounds). The .WAV files make the sounds like you get when you delete a file or do something wrong.

Guess Post 64717>64755>64917>64930>64945 …has me all confused!
But the dang *.wav files still show up when I do a Search for *.wav, and these are sounds associated with screensavers that come with WinME – which are (screensavers) uninstalled. I thought ALL parts of a program/file are automatically uninstalled along with the program (i.e.-Jungle screensaver)…or am I really getting confused

            • #539266

              Hi Lonnie
*.wav files are Waveform Audio (PCM Wave) files. As such you can ‘associate’ them with events, using the icon in Control Panel. Once you’ve set these up, the rest are more or less superfluous, except for one or two in Office. But if you don’t want any more sounds, just Delete the lot. Your system will not crash, but it’ll be mighty quiet. They’ll be in the Recycle Bin, so you can Restore any you regret having removed.
Screensavers are a pain in the donkey; I usually get rid of the lot (not needed on modern systems anyway), unless you prefer to spend your time gazing at revolving cubes and the like. Same goes for all those horrible *.bmp files in your Windows folder. Mind you, I have about 10^6 clip art I never use, which I’ve kept for some reason.
And fonts? Don’t talk to me about fonts….

            • #539285

grinFonts…there should only be a font file set up as ‘use the ones you really need…delete the rest’…gawd..daughter has 550+ fonts on her computer..many are duplicates from card programs, etcetc grin

Anyway, as to the *wav problem -I have no worries as to lack of disk space…I just wanted to know why the ‘sounds’ of deleted screensavers (example-Jungle) are still listed in my directory and why they weren’t deleted with the rest of the screensavers? I mean, how many places that I visit on the ‘net will use the ‘recycle bin’ wav from the Jungle?
Oh well..maybe just stop wondering about this stuff..I have a 20GB HDD…with 18GB available…not much stuff in there…vast..just like Alaska rofl
My desktop right now is a cross between a baby blue and lilac…have never had a screensaver..seen too many of them on other computers to make me go bug-eyed eyeout
Gee..I have to think what I can get to fill up the 18GB that’s available.
              PS..clipart..what kind of clipart??? rofl

              [/indent]
ONLY 550? I have more than 3300 yikes (only 150 or so active) – like you say mostly from the various graphics packages out there, but then too I’ve been known to actually go out looking for something different.

              smile
I just checked the number of fonts on my computer…lol..would you believe 57???? rofl
              Just the basic stuff..nothing fancy.

              Lonnie,

Jungle etc. are not just screensavers, though they have screensavers included. they are destop themes which can determine your color scheme, what icons are used and most relevant what sounds are employed for different system events. I think you should leave your wav files in place, as many of then will be set up to be used by the system. As you are not short of disc space, you can ignore them.

              Andrew

            • #539510

grin Yup..I agree..I just looked at them…then closed them up where they were…and went merrily away…hopefully forgetting I even know that they are there!! laugh
Ah…I think I had better stop browsing inside my directory…who knows what I will find??? yep

If I have no use for .wav, do I delete them or what?
I found 274 .wav…interactive training and screensavers – don’t use them at all!
      Please…need comments/guidance.
      TIA smile

        Lonnie,

I have never seen a case of .wav files causing ANY type of error..

A search for your problem at Microsoft Knowledge Base returned several results, which lead to the question, What are you doing in I.E. to make this error occur? It’s not a random occurance, for example, if it happens only when you open .PDF files, that’s a clue..

Sorry if you’ve already clarified this, but it’s very difficult to follow when there’s two threads on a given topic… smile

          1. Post 64676 – me – re GPF in USER.EXE
          2. Post 64717 – Karen mentioned .wav
          3. Post 64917 – MerC says search *.wav
          4. Post 64945 – me – asked if I needed these .wav for screensavers
          5. Post 68068 – me – re 64930 I asked for reply as to whether I should keep .wav (never got reply)
          6. Then all posts after that went off tangent – sorry blush-my fault
Drk..as to original post re USER.EXE – no .PDF files were ever involved – that I know of…I guess it was just my WinME deciding it was time for me to re-install the setup.exe to correct whatever .dll or whatever was messing up!
In all..I guess entire post(s) and threads were my error.Too easy to go off target. I promise it won’t happen again…at least not knowingly. frown

          • #539661

Are you still experiencing this problem?

            • #539682

helloDrk..if you mean the ones that have USER.EXE…no I don’t…who knows why they showed up and why they disappeared again. Only thing I did after the original posting (for my computer) was to use the setup.exe in OPTIONS/CAB and installed WindowsME again…maybe that cleared up the problems.
Haven’t done that yet to daughter’s computer (which I am using right now)…but I haven’t seen any of these USER.EXE msgs come up lately either… hmmn scratch shrug

            • #539702

So you’re having no problems now?

My appologies, I just feel that if i’m having difficulty following a particular thread, then the chances are, I’m not alone…
              wink

As I recall, you were going to remove your .wavs per advice given that they may be the root of the problem. If you’re no longer experiencing the problem, you can let them be.

Generally it’s not wise to remove things to resolve issues… Unless it’s traced back to a program installation or otherwise.. I would never advise anyone to remove all files of one type, (unless they were .tmp files…)

            • #539708

laugh nope..I was never going to ‘remove’ them at all…just wondered about them…
I think we had best just end this now cuz we all will be getting headthrob if we keep on going…agreed??? rofl

            • #539710

              Agreed.. headthrob beep sarcasm

Thanks for clearing it all up! wink
