I’ve developed a flashcard database to help my kids study (tracks correct/incorrect answers, can view different categories, etc.), and decided to give them the ability to make a hard copy (printed) of the flashcards. The report consists of the question field next to the answer field — 4 such rows to a page. They cut the 4 strips and fold the answer so it’s behind the quesiton.

Now for the question – is it possible to rotate a field in a report so it prints 180 degrees (upside down)? I’d like to rotate either the question or the answer field. This way, they could flip the flashcard over top/bottom, rather than left/right to view the answer.

    Thanks,

    Randy

I don’t believe you’ll be able to do this within an Access report, although I may be proved wrong!

You could use Microsoft Publisher. What you need to do is open a blank page in publisher and then click on:>>>>

      >>>>> Mail Merge
      >>>>> Open data source
      >>>>> Merge information from another type of file

You should now be able to select the Microsoft Access Database with your information in it and then the table in that Database that contains the information you want to merge into publisher.

Next draw a text box on your publisher document. With this text box selected, click on:
      >>>>>> Mail merge
      >>>>>> Insert field

Choose the field from the list that you want shown in this box.

Now with the text box selected, click on:
      >>>> Arrange
      >>>> Rotate-Flip

Rotate the text box until it’s upside-down, now click the mail merge button again and selected show merge results.

Hopefully if everythings gone according to plan you should have text in the box upside-down!

      The fly in the ointment!
There is one awkward problem you will have to overcome! They’re always is! You can only have one set of records per page in publisher that means if you’re set of records consists of a question and an answer, then you can only have one question and one answer per page.

However there is a workaround, what you will have to do is form a query where the four records you want on one page are in the same row. You would then use this query as the record source for your merge.

You can’t do it directly in any version of Access up through 2000 and you didn’t indicate the version of Access you are using, so it’s hard to answer your question. It might be easiest for you to export the data to Word and print it there where you have more control.

Word may have more control, but it can’t rotate text 180.

Although, If you put the text into a table in Word, rotate some of it 90 CW and rotate some CCW and print it landscape, that should give you what you need.

Geting the data into Word, is not really all that difficult either.

I have attached a sample Word Doc of what I mean.

It might be possible to print the questions on one side and the answers on the other directly by using two reports, and feeding the paper back in upside down. you would need to run the Questions in reverse order and make sure that you were using an exact multiple of questions per page so that they match up.

      Hope that makes sense

I think it would be easier to export it to excel, rotate the questions 90 degrees one way and the answers 90 degrees the other then print in landscape.
