Neighborhood Watch – How to Protect Your Packages And Your Ethics
By Lam Thuy Vo  –  October 11, 2023  –  The Markup
    – Big Tech Is Watching You. We’re Watching Big Tech. –

“We investigated Ring (Amazon Camera) for months. Here are the best privacy options for prospective and existing customers. As doorbell cameras have become prominent in many parts of the country, so have the moral conundrums around whether people should be using them. At a time when police officers may receive email notifications about camera footage uploaded to the social media app Neighbors, The Markup put together this guide focused on data privacy to help people who want more control over their data and personal information, while also helping them protect their porch.

Wait, What Are the Moral Conundrums?
While every camera system has had its fair share of scandals, from hackers taking over users’ cameras to police potentially getting access to footage without consent, Ring’s aggressive marketing to enlist law enforcement agencies to the Neighbors social platform has triggered enough ethical questions for some publications to stop recommending the popular doorbell camera brand.”

Everyone’s watching and recording everyone else in The Neighborhood, and the cops get it all.

“There’s Mrs. Johnson, she’s stroking the neighbor’s cat, obviously grooming her for a Satanic ritual! Call the cops!”

What the heck is this, an episode from “The Prisoner” series? Is this “The Village?”  What happened to the 4th Amendment? Am I #6? What happened to Mr. Rogers and HIS neighborhood?

I give up. Time to move to the desert or the mountains…

Move to Ireland — they have better beer and the EU has better privacy laws than the USA, which is too worried about offending big business.

No, it doesn’t work like that.  It does help to monitor package delivery and in my case I actually use it to keep an eye on my Dad and my Dog.  It’s not a privacy issue for all.

Does anybody know of a security camera system that does NOT connect to the cloud? I might be interested in one that stores the surveillance video locally.

Thank you, Susan. Nice to know that closed/local systems ARE available. That takes out 75% of the problem.

Now to find a system like the above not require hard wiring. The place I am in is 70+ years old, and any time someone says “Wiring” I say, “Electrician, please!” Rechargeable battery types would be more up my alley.I’m not DIY’er on this place! 🙂

I imagine there are some renters, too whose landlords might not allow altering the wiring without it being done by an electrician and paid for by the tenant.
