Popping in narration (XP)

When I add narration to slides, I end up with popping each time it switches to the next slide. (See attached sample.) It is unrelated to the mic I am using (I have switched to test) and happens even when I am silent during narration. Any idea how to get rid of it?

Also, I am recording at a low sound quality setting to save space. Any advantage to using a higher quality for getting rid of the popping?

Finally, at the end it always asks me about saving the timings. I never want to save timings. Is there a way to turn this question off?

It appears to me that the popping you are hearing is at the beginning of the narration of each slide – if you have the mic turned off when you begin to record it may be the mic turning on. It may also be the quality setting you are using – there is a note on the narration dialog that suggests linking the ones for various slides. You could try that and see if that reduces the problem. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any way to turn off the prompt about saving timings.

My mic does not have an on/off switch. Even then, turning it on would make sense if the popping was at the beginning of just the first slide but it is also at the start of every single slide.

I am going to have to experiment and see if this is the case. I hope not as the finished slides have to fit on a CD and the higher qualities take up a LOT of space.

I saw that but did not really understand what it was talking about. Does it create a separate file containing the sound?

PowerPoint seems to create WAV files internally since the files are so massive. It would be nice if there was a way to like to one or more MP3 files to reduce the space needed for the sound.

I’d recommend recording the sound outside of PPT and then inserting the narrations later. PPT’s recording (as you’re seeing) leaves a lot to be desired.
