How do you get rid of those annoying pop ups! The spy cam one is particularly annoying.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody_MVPSeptember 28, 2001 at 7:35 pm #544601You need to download a third party software to stop these, but it will also turn off several other items that you may what to use. Check Google.com for “Pop Ups” and you will find all kinds of links.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 29, 2001 at 9:39 am #544659Hi! As somebody who only asks questions, it’s great to be able to answer one! I downloaded a freeware app called “Popup Killer” about three weeks ago and it really works. It eliminates about 90-95% of those annoying ######s. You’ll know because it makes a “slam” sound everytime it kills one. It makes me grin everytime I hear it. Download it at http://software.xfx.net/utilities/popupkiller.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 29, 2001 at 10:50 am #544663Many pop-ups and pop-unders are controlled by Active Scripting. Active Scripting is also responsible for spreading the recent Nimda worm when you simply visit a web page. It is a very powerful technology with some very BAD potential uses.
Quite frankly, Active Scripting and ActiveX are too much of a security risk for me to run in the Internet zone. I STRONGLY recommend you disable BOTH of these in your Internet zone.
You can find these controls under Tools | Internet Options… | Security tab | Internet Zone | Custom Level… button. Select Disable for all ActiveX and Scripting choices. THIS WILL ELIMINATE ALL POP-UP and POP-UNDER ADS. Additionally, it will help secure your computer.
Now, since you do want to use Scripting and AcitveX on some sites (for example THIS site), you need to enter this site into your Trusted zone. That is also done on the Security tab. Select Trusted sites, click Sites…, remove the check from the “Require server verification…” box, and enter http://www.wopr.com. Repeat this process for any site you “Trust”. You will now have a MUCH safer system — and NO pop-ups! ;-]
