I’m sure this must have come up before but I can’t find any reference to it. Is there a way to tell Explorer that a click on a link that will open a new window is not a pop-up? It’s very annoying to be told that a pop-up has been blocked when it hasn’t. I can’t always remember to hold down the Ctrl key when I click on a link.

Go to Tools | Pop-Up Blocker | Pop-up blocker settings then add the web site to the list to allow pop-ups from that site.

But that doesn’t really help. I still want to block pop-ups, just not new windows.

Popups are just new windows. So, you either enable them for the site in question or remember to CTRL+click.

I understand that, but IE should be able to tell the difference between a button I click on and a pop-up that wants to open by itself.

What size window are you running IE in? If the default is too small, it may be that IE interprets new windows as pop-ups however they are instigated.

Other than that, I would recommend you use FireFox with tabbed browsing – once you get used to middle-clicking links into new tabs you may never look back…

Are you using the “High” setting? I find that the “Medium” settings blocks nearly everything undesirable without any bad side effects. If the rare pop-up is unacceptable, well, pick yer poison. grin

Yes, I was using the high setting. I’ll try the medium setting and see how well that works.
