• Plus Sign Bug

I get this bug frequently when I start up my computer. It writes plus signs continually in any blank space – for example, in a notepad file – and can only be stopped by closing the file. This prevents me from using my computer, since I can’t do anything without this bug writing all over my files. The only thing to do then is Restart – which may or may not correct the problem.

This bug is extremely annoying, as I live in the US Virgin Islands, and we get frequent power outages. After every outage, I must restart my computer, only to get this bug. One time, I had to restart my computer 14 times before it solved itself.

I am using Windows version 1803.

Do you have a key stuck on your keyboard? Have you tried a different keyboard?

Also is Sticky Keys turned on?

It definitely sounds like a stuck key. Assuming you have the separate number pad on the right, it would most likely be that plus sign key.

two suggestions 1) unplug the keyboard and use the on screen keyboard

2)press key after key ( a then s then d etc ) until you find the stuck key.

as for + keys on an English keyboard the number pad area has one below the –

and the = shifted also gives a plus, but though I not sure which one , a control types  key ( Cnt, Alt, Fn, Window key ) could also give a plus sign

Thank you for the suggestions. I know I have never turned on Sticky Keys, but my keyboard could be at fault. I will wait until it happens again, and then (1) try a different keyboard, and (2) search for a sticky key.

The sticky keys setting has nothing to do with stuck keyboard keys anyway.

Does your keyboard have a numeric keypad with a large + key?

If anyone ever eats near that keyboard, I would hold it upside down and drop it on the desk from about a foot to empty out all the crumbs.

Thank you all again for your suggestions. It turns out that I discovered a solution to the “+ sign bug” ( but not the reason for its occurrence ) quite by accident.

It is not necessary to restart the computer. Whenever the + sign is running, just press ANY key. That stops it.
