because I have a used iMac,osx10.6 whose virtues Nathan, among others, has extolled but it is restricting me from installing adblocker extensions on acceptable browsers in this version.
I really am a novice with this system as well as this forum, but would like to learn as much as I can before upgrading and would be very grateful to anyone who can provide advice or point to where I might find help with this rather impressive machine..
..this browser seems to work well as does FFx45.9 except for adblocking..and I have NewMoon 27.7 in which uBlock is enabled but hits with this message..
‘XML Parsing Error: syntax error Location: https://catalogue.sasklibraries.ca/ Line Number 2, Column 1:’..when I try to access a favorite library website..if this means anything to anyone?
You can see that I’m headbutting a wall, Nathan or Alex or anyone who might help?
    gratefully,
    Greg

Feels like your catalogue link is old/deprecated, try going in via https://sasklibraries.ca/members

Add specific lists (or enable more of the default lists) to uBO, big list here but don’t use too many…

Thank you, satrow..since you are an mvp, I’m impressed by your attempt to help me..and indeed I can access the members area of that website, but unfortunately the link there to the catalogue only takes me to my member library. In fact, using New Moon I can’t even connect to the reCaptcha to explain my dilemma in a contact form…another inadequacy of this browser.
I really do appreciate assistance attempt, and if you have any other ideas I hope to read them.
      gratefully,
      greg

Waterfox 46 is quite old and obsolete by now.  Waterfox Classic is based on Waterfox 56, the last pre-Quantum version of Firefox.  Is it possible that is what you mean?

Waterfox Quantum is my main browser.  I use uBlock Origin with it, the legacy version (which is still being updated by its developer).

Anything that blocks parts of a web page has the potential for causing breakage.  Sometimes, you have to look at the display the adblocker gives you and see what bits it has blocked and try one by one to see if it begins working.  You can also turn the blocker off for those sites, but that also brings back the ads.  In practice, this happens a lot more often when using a script blocker, but adblockers can do it too.

Sometimes, addons other than ad or script blockers can cause certain sites not to work.  Before deciding that it is the browser, it’s a good idea to try the page in safe mode to see if it works properly.  If it still fails, you could try creating a new profile in the browser and using that to load the site.  If it fails there too, then it looks like it’s the browser, but with any addons loaded, you just don’t know if one of them is behaving in a weird way, perhaps interacting badly with another addon, and causing unexpected behavior.

I’m very glad to see your reply, but you see I’m having trouble finding a browser version that is acceptable to this Osx 10.6.8 so that is why I’m using Wf46. Whenever I’ve tried to install anything higher like your Quantum, it is rejected. I’d love to find a browser upon which I could add uBlock or adguard, anything to which I can add a blocker.

I’ve tried disabling uBlock on Wf 46 to access the library catalogue with no luck.

And I would know how to go to safe mode on a windows machine, but I have no idea how to do that on this iMac, as well as changing my profile here..
still, I do appreciate your concern and attempt to help, Ascaris.

Is there a version of AdBlock Plus that works on it?

Nathan: I use Adblock Plus with Waterfox. This addon is created, distributed and maintained by German developers. It can be used with Chrome, FireFox, Safari, IE 11 and just about any other browser, and it really keeps ads at bay. I am violently allergic to ads and have not seen any for more than two years now, since I first tried out this ad blocker, except for those in a few sites that I have whitelisted. More about this addon here:

      https://adblockplus.org/en/

There is also an informative article on this in Wikipedia.

It does not block all ads, at least in principle: its developers have a category of “acceptable ads” that have to fulfill several conditions to be allowed through while providing them with some money in exchange. It is the same idea as that of those “respectful ads” that used to provide a stream of revenue to AskWoody before it started to get funded purely with contributions from us loungers, with the contributors being classified as “Plus” members and awarded golden cockades.  However, I do not recall ever seeing one of those “acceptable ads” myself. But I have sent the developers some small donations, now and then, using PayPal.

There’s also a setting where you can disable acceptable ads as well.

You can also try Ghostery. I use it in Waterfox and it works very good.
