• Platform Role – Bluetooth Keyboard issue

    We have a Beelink Gemini x45 mini computer we use mainly as a media device and after the last two patch updates the mini Bluetooth keyboard we use with it stops functioning.  I must completely uninstall and reinstall the keyboard to get it functioning again, and then, it will disappear occasionally at random.

    Up until recently I would see the keyboard ID and status in the notification area, but no more.  Now I see “Airplane Mode” and “WiFi Hotspot” instead in the notification area.

    I looked in Admin tools, System information summary, and see the “Platform Type” is set to “Mobile”.   I suspect this has changed, but I have not looked at/seen this bit of information before, so I can’t be sure.

    My question is, is this a parameter that a user can change?  I have searched the internet looking for information on this topic, but find nothing helpful.  Some references to power settings, but I find nothing like this in my power setting options.

    We are on build/release 1909 with a Celeron J4105 processor.  This is a mini computer with no battery, video connected externally through HDMI, and of course, the external Bluetooth keyboard.

    If anyone has any ideas here, I would appreciate any knowledgeable feedback/help.

      You don’t see a Bluetooth icon in the Action Center even if you Expand from 4 to 12 icons?

      Bluetooth icon in Action Center

      Is the keyboard listed at Settings, Devices, Bluetooth & other devices?

      Okay, this is going to sound really dumb, but I can’t figure out how to expand the Action Center as you suggest to 12, try as I might!  How is this done, please.

      As yes, the Bluetooth keyboard does show up in Devices, and Bluetooth shows up as enabled, but the keyboard fails to function until deleted and reinstalled.

      Thanks for the feedback.

        Settings App\Devices\Blurtooth & other devices.
        Add it here? Is there an “Add device”?

        If not there, how about the Control Panel?

        Click on the word Expand at top left of the row of four icons.

      Not sure what the “it” is in your statement, Add it here?

      Going into Settings, APP, there is no Devices selection.

      Going to Settings, Bluetooth & other devices, I checked a previously unchecked item, “Show notifications to connect using Swift Pair”.  Now, I have no idea what this does/means, but it changed nothing.  Still only see the three items in the Action Area: WiFi, Airplane Mode, and Mobile Hotspot.

      Thanks

        I have 21H1, and I know there have been many changes since 1909. But this is what I see under Settings\Devices. Thought the “Add device” might have been available back then.

          Yes, I believe you are correct, the differences must be in the build version.

          Any idea what is going on with the “Platform Role” thing?  Do you think this can be changed to Desktop? And how?

            Bluetooth is like short-distance WiFi. It is “radio,” =>mobile.
            Look in Device Manager in the Control Panel. Click on the device, under one of the tabs, see if there is a setting for allowing the device to sleep, and if it’s enabled.

            • #2378368

              There are five sub categories under Bluetooth in Device Manager and I went through each and every one of the entries and looked at each of the tabs.  Found nothing akin to sleep mode in any tab of all the five sub categories under Bluetooth.

              But it sounded like a worthwhile exercise.

              It would have been a pulldown with various settings. Maybe power saving, let the computer put the device to sleep, something of the like if it was available. Many devices have that setting.

              I’ll keep looking, but I doubt that is the issue.  This PC is connected to a TV set as a monitor and the PC can sit idle for half a day or more at times when the TV is used to watch TV, with no effect on the Bluetooth keyboard.  The fail to function is far less prevalent to make me think that it would be just the device falling asleep.  And I also think any device that goes into sleep mode would recover when PC activity is resumed, and not require a device to be deleted and reinstalled to function again, after going onto a sleep mode.

              But, then again, this is Windows.

      There is no “Expand” at the top of the action window, but realizing there is only three items residing in the action window now, this makes sense to me.

      But back to one of my original concerns, that of being this “Platform Role” displaying in System Information.  I see “Mobile”, but I think I should (like to) see “Desktop”!

      Can anyone address this issue?

      Thanks all

        Laptop Platform Role is Mobile in System Information?

          Interesting article, but it does not address the issue of how to convert the Platform Role from Mobile to Desktop, but instead digresses into discussion about drivers.  But I’m glad to see I’m not alone trying to decipher this enigma.

          This author states “even though my HP laptop”, indicating to me that indeed, in this situation, his Platform Role being Mobile, is correct.  One of the definitions of a Mobile device in this capacity is one that uses a battery, which this laptop would.  The author is also confusing the issue by conflating “mobile phone” with the Platform Role “Mobile”.  To the best of my knowledge, which admittedly is limited, Platform Role can only be Mobile or Desktop.

          Still hold out hope someone out there can shed more light on this subject and determine if, and how, this parameter can be modified.  But every little bit of information helps, so thanks for this link.

            Couldn’t find anyway to change the value, but the command wmic systemenclosure get chassistypes will display the “Chassis Type” that’s stored in the Windows registry.

            Possible values:

            01 = Other
            02 = Unknown
            03 = Desktop
            04 = Low Profile Desktop
            05 = Pizza Box
            06 = Mini Tower
            07 = Tower
            08 = Portable
            09 = Laptop
            10 = Notebook
            11 = Hand Held
            12 = Docking Station
            13 = All in One
            14 = Sub Notebook
            15 = Space-Saving
            16 = Lunch Box
            17 = Main System Chassis
            18 = Expansion Chassis
            19 = SubChassis
            20 = Bus Expansion Chassis
            21 = Peripheral Chassis
            22 = Storage Chassis
            23 = Rack Mount Chassis
            24 = Sealed-Case PC
            30 = Tablet
            31 = Convertible
            32 = Detachable

            The value displayed by that command is stored in the “sub-keys” located at the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\HardwareConfig in the registry as an EnclosureType DWORD but the value gets overwritten with a value that’s read from your PC’s BIOS during very boot up/restart.

              I don’t think Chassis Type is the same as Platform Role, which has 10 possible values:

              PlatformRoleUnspecified

              PlatformRoleDesktop

              PlatformRoleMobile

              PlatformRoleWorkstation

              PlatformRoleEnterpriseServer

              PlatformRoleSOHOServer

              PlatformRoleAppliancePC

              PlatformRolePerformanceServer

              PlatformRoleSlate

              PlatformRoleMaximum

              POWER_PLATFORM_ROLE enumeration

              Lots of good information here.  First off, the post above about the EnclosureType yields a result of 10 indicating Notebook.  I would say this is pretty close to what this mini PC is.

              Now the next post about the Platform Role is full of a lot of great information from the included links.  Unfortunately, this is all way above my head.  I have no idea what “These values are read from the Preferred_PM_Profile field of the Fixed ACPI Description Table (FADT)” is/means.  Following the explanations from the various links doesn’t help me as I don’t know (understand) where, or how, these commands are executed to reveal anything.  But, the bottom line, are these values user definable?

              One more thing.  Powered up the mini PC today, and now I see seven items in the Action Center.  Present are: All Settings, Network, Connect, Bluetooth (showing the keyboard ID), Location, Nearby Sharing, and Screen Snip.  Gone are the Airplane Mode, and Mobile Hotspot, now!

              <i>Mrs Gump always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”  </i>How true!
