    is there a way to change the default setting of the VALUE field from COUNT to SUM?

      Excel will suggest SUM if the data field is numeric, and COUNT otherwise i.e. if the data field contains text, TRUE/FALSE, dates or a mixture of data types. You can’t change these defaults.

      Function Description
      Sum The sum of the values.
      This is the default function for numeric data.
      Count The number of data values.
      The Count summary function works the same as the COUNTA worksheet function.
      Count is the default function for data other than numbers.
