I want to draw a Pie of Pie type chart. How do I specify which values go into the second pie?

The information I wnat is like :
Of the 10, 6 are A, 4 are B, and of the 4 that are B, 1 is B(i), 2 are B(ii) and 1 is B(i).

Hope this is clear and someone can help.

Hi Jonathon,
If you already have your basic pie chart, you can right click on the section you want broken out and choose Format Data Series and on the options tab there are various ways of breaking it out.
If you don’t have a chart yet, then the easiest way is to have your data in the form:
A B B B
i ii iii
6 1 2 1
Highlight all the data, click on the chart wizard button, choose Pie chart, highlight the Pie of Pie type and Excel should pretty much do the rest!

Thanks for the reply, but I still can’t get it working. I cannot specify which parts should be in the second pie. Excel Wizard places one of the Pie2 pieces in Pie1.

Any further ideas??

I’m using Excel 97. I tried both of your approaches and only the first one worked (after trying a thirdtime). But I have needed this in the past. So help!

I’m not sure if your example to label things as i ii iii was to be interpreted literally but I did. When I hit enter after typing i, the i was changed to an I. After completing the items and going thru the chart wizard, I didn’t get anything that seemed correct. I got the i piece as a separate slice, the ii and iii were combined in the main pie and broken apart in the sub-pie. But what’s happening with the first piece (the one where i is changed to I)?

I think my reply lost some formatting (I need to brush up my markup skills).
The i, ii and iii were meant to all be under a B in my example so that Excel can treat themm all as B in the main pie and break them out as i, ii and iii in the sub pie. Does that help? If not I’ll attach something showing what I mean.

I seem to have the same problems Jonathan had when he replied to your first response. But he finally got it working.

In your first approach (already have a pie), what I think was left unsaid is that you basically have to start over again with selecting your data and choosing the pie in pie when going thru the chart wizard (or however else you do it). Nothing else worked for me. For example, with an existing single pie, I clicked on a piece (I think it was key lime). The Format Data Series did not have the choice you mentioned.

When I started over and chose pie in pie, then when I selected a piece, the Format Data Series did give me a choice as to how many pieces to put in the smaller pie.

When starting from the beginning, I did what you said. As I said in my last post, my i turned into an I. I did have the I ii and iii positioned under the values that were to be part of the smaller pie. I got the same results as Jonathan seemed to.

But if the first approach works as noted above, then why bother with the second approach with the labels? I guess the labels (i ii iii) tells Excel immediately which pieces go into the smaller pie. But I can’t seem to get that to work. So I just take what Excel gives me and go back and fix the smaller pie with the Format Data Series.

So if you can send me something, that would be great. thks.

My apologies – I’ve just reread my original post, which was hugely misleading! I meant to put “if you already have your basic pie of pie chart” then right-click etc.
And you are right on the other count – when I did a quick test I had used different data – 3 sets on the main pie with one split into 2 bits on the other pie. I really ought to know by now that consistency is not the MS watchword. I am now scuttling away in embarrassment….
