Pictures moving around in a document (Office 97)

Hello,

I am writing a document (a manual basically) and I keep having this problem whereby after I copied from the clipboard a picture, it starts shifting places, or 2 or more pictures even get on top of each other. I can’t manage to put them to the proper place, I even found pictures on other pages- or another thing that happens, when I try to drag them down, they just disappear at the bottom of the page, but do not go to the next page – it is as if they never existed there in the first place…
Is there a way to keep them where I want (some special option, etc), as I’m already pulling my hair in frustration…

Also how is best to add printscreens to the document, ist it via copy-paste from where I take the printscreens or is there a better way (to also make the file size smaller)?

This is a perennial problem when using floating objects.

Try making the graphics inline rather than floating as it will save lots of heartache.

Since the graphics are already in the file you can right click them and choose Format Picture to turn off the floating attribute.

About screen shots: if you do a search for “Screen capture” in the Software Finds and Wants forum, you’ll find links to several screen capture programs that can be very useful – they let you capture a window, or an object on the screen, or an area you select with the mouse.

Hi K, not sure if the others have answered what you need, when I use pictures or objects in Word I find it easy to lock them into place. Just INSERT/PICTURE FROM FILE grab the picture wanted and it lands on the Word document, select it, right click, FORMAT PICTURE/WRAPPING/TIGHT, obviously if you want text to be inserted over the picture select another option, same thing if you want the text to be top and bottom etc. I find once I have selected my WRAPPING option the object or photo is locked into place, then I can drag and drop it where ever I want. Another couple of things to consider:

Pictures may move around, seemingly of their own accord, if the paragraphs they and they’re anchored to will no longer fit on the same page together with whatever else is already there. When you click on a picuture, you should be able to see a small anchor symbol somewhere in the margins on the same page. Make sure it’s attached to the paragraph the picture belongs with. If it’s not, you can drag the anchor to the correct paragraph. You can also tell word to lock the anchor to a particular paragraph, and to stop the picture moving about on the page when the text moves (on the same page).

If you’ve got a series of pictures that need to be kept together, you might find it easiest to put them all into a one-cell table.

Thanks a lot for all your replies. I am going through all the suggestions, some do seem to help, but not for all pictures alike. I also found that if I save the file as jpg and insert it from a file, it works (but again not for all of them).

Hi Kislany
I had this problem but eventually tamed it with help from the Forum. Look at my post 69610 for helpful replies. I tend to use an in line graphic now which can be moved just like a text character with the Tab, Return and Justification Keys.

Yes, he omitted the 1 in front. THe post is actually 169610.
