Have a graphic that I inserted into a document. The doc has 2 columns. This is a newsletter that has many images. They all stay in place, except ONE. It is very frustrating. I am trying to position the image to the right of a paragraph in the right-hand column. This is something I’ve done several times in this and many other documents. This time, though, I can’t get the image to stay. It looks like it stays, but if I save the doc or scroll up/down or page up/down, the image jumps to other places on the page – not consistently the same place. I have anchored the image. I have set it to have the text wrap tightly. I have changed every setting, but no matter what I set, the image jumps. Any ideas?

If I take this one page and copy it to a blank document. I can get the image to stay. SOMETHING in the rest of this newsletter is messing with the anchor.

I’ve had similar problems — I agree – somthing is messing with it.

I found that setting all anchors visible helped a little (ocassionally).

Another trick is to position the character cursor prior to where you think the image is, and then move it forward one right-arrow at a time. The cursor moves past one character at a time. You eventually have the cursor jump over the graphic (which Word thinks of as a character) and gain insights from that.

Last gasp is simply to delete the graphic, AND the offending paragraph (at this point a phantom picture often appears).
Reenter the paragraph, position the cursor within the paragraph and re-insert the picture.

      Hi, Melanie,
Some graphics are more graphic than others….
I have a couple of cartoon pictures that won’t behave until I go to the Format Picture dialog box and play with some of the alternatives. In particular, in the Position tab of the Format Picture dialog box, click on “Float over text”. Then have another try. That might do it for you.

Is the image too large for the column widths? Word can be a little cranky over things like that.

Have you locked the usually-hidden anchor symbol for each graphic? If you select the graphic and then look back in the left margin, you should find the anchor, next to some paragraph. Hopefully it is at/near the paragraph where you want the graphic to settle down and remain. In the format dialog box, you can lock the anchor to the desired paragraph, so that when the paragraph moves to another page, the graphic goes with it.

      HTH… joy
