I got a new computer with WinXP Pro and I am wondering where do I put the personal.xls folder. I put it in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice2000OfficeXLStart, but when I run a macro that opens a worksheet, it is always asking for a location for that file.

Also, I can’t edit a macro because it says I must unhide it, but it’s not open.

      Gary,

If you record a macro (anything will do) and specify ‘personal macro workbook’ in the Record Macro dialog box, then Excel will automatically create a personal.xls file. This is the easiest way of doing it.

On my machine personal.xls can be found on my machine (XPpro / XL2k) in:
      C:Documents and SettingsNickApplication DataMicrosoftExcelXLSTARTPERSONAL.XLS
      (Nick being my user name)

Try the Window menu and see if there is an option to Unhide. If so select it and see what files are open but hidden.

You can also edit macros in hidden workbooks (unless they protected) from the VBA environment (Alt-F11).

Press Alt+F11 to open the VBA Editor. Look in the project explorer on the left side of the window to see if there is a Personal.xls open. The workbook can be hidden and you can still edit macos in it.
