..those enjoying Windows 11 on unsupported machines via the Insider Program will be unhappy to know that Microsoft has started kicking out such configurations. As reported to Neowin by several of our readers, people running the OS on non-compliant PCs are now seeing the following notification via Windows Update:

Your PC does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11. Your device is not eligible to join the Windows Insider Program on Windows 11. Please install Windows 10 to participate in the Windows Insider Program in the Release Preview Channel…

Doesn’t look like MS wants to collect data on currently non-supported configurations for later expansion of the supported list.

It is still possible using registry hacks, but there is no guarantee that it will work after the final release.

Microsoft would have to get rid of the registry to completely eliminate installation on “unsupported” equipment; and Windows 11 has a registry.

They could remove the registry key and simply have it always act in the way it now does if the value within the key is left at its default. They could easily close that door; the question is whether they will.

They could close that door, but not easily at all.  TrustedInstaller writes new registry keys/values with every update.  Windows cannot lock out TrustedInstaller and still be Windows.  Every security update would require a new ISO and have to be a clean install, and I kinda doubt that Microsoft is going to go that route, don’t you?

So no, they likely aren’t going to close that door any time soon.  And it’s still not October 5; no need to jump the shark before we even get to it.

Microsoft clarifies its stance to remove non-compliant Windows 11 PCs from Insider Program

Recently, Microsoft started notifying Windows 11 Insiders with unsupported hardware that they will soon be moved to Windows 10 Release Preview channel as they don’t meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 11.

This move caused quite a stir and now Microsoft has clarified its stance on the issue. In a tweet, Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc pointed out that this move was announced along with the Windows 11 announcement and should not come as a surprise to Windows users. Brandon further noted that unsupported PCs running Windows 11 Insider builds will continue receiving cumulative updates, but Microsoft will not seed new builds to those systems….

Once Windows 11 is generally available, these PCs will be opted out of flighting and will not be able to receive future Windows 11 Insider Preview builds. These PCs must clean install back to Windows 10 with the media (ISOs) that we provide and can then join the Release Preview Channel to preview Windows 10 updates….

What sense would it make for Microsoft to offer Windows 10 for free, trusting that Windows 7 users would migrate to it, if now they will not be able to do so to Windows 11? Predictably, Microsoft changes its mind (again): https://www.theverge.com/2021/8/28/22646035/microsoft-windows-11-iso-workaround-no-update-guarantee
