PC WILL NOT Shut Down

hello again…

well…here’s one I’ve never experienced before…[&…I’m not sure if it’s an OS problem or a hdwe. problem…but I’m starting w/ the OS first, I suppose]:

My computer (a Compaq SR5610F) will not shut off…when I go to Start > Shut Down > Shut Down Windows (running XP Pro). It simply reboots & starts up again…almost like I’ve selected ‘Restart’ instead of ‘Shut Down’.

it (the PC) seems to be running OK, save some weirdness, but the first thing I did was to run a full scan w/ AVG Anti-Virus (which also has Anti-RootKit & Anti-Spyware functionality…which is largely ineffective…but there). It came up w/ about 100 viruses; & I killed them all.

Then…I started STOPZilla & ran a full scan…(STOPZilla is much more effective in the above mentioned departments…but I never let it start automatically ’cause it takes like 3 minutes to load).

So…STOPZilla came up w/ one spyware app…in my Registry…known as ‘Nebular-E’. I killed that, then completely cleaned my computer again using MS ‘Disc Cleanup’, ‘CCleaner’ & ‘Registry Mechanic’. I also killed everything I could from my browser (IE7)…history…temps…cookies, etc., etc.

Then I attempted a shut down again…& the machine again rebooted; & restarted.

(to shut down, overnight,…I depressed the On/Off Switch on the Compaq…this morning…when I hit the same button…everything started normally…no overt other problems).

didn’t know where to turn…so I came here.

anybody ever experience this before…a windows-based computer that will not turn off…???

would sure appreciate some help…thanks very much,

Do it reboot immediately?

What messages are displayed before the reboot?

Have you checked for driver updates for your video card & NIC?

Have you run any hardware tests?

See Microsoft Online Crash Analysis – windiag and Memtest86+ – Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool[/url] for two tests to check RAM.

Usually, You can download a test from the HD vendor for you drive.

1) upon booting up to come back here…chkdsk ran; & divulged the following:

SMI12.tmp index $130 of file 72 >
recovering lost files >
recovering orphaned file: SMIA.tmp (107037) into directory file 72

but…same thing continued to happen.

2) tried the auto restart uncheck thing…what I get then (at shut down) is some sort of blue screen that states that the system has been turned off (&…I’ll attempt this aagin & come back later w/ exact language)

3) really hate chasing down driver updates…(but the aforementioned blue screen looked an awful lot like one I’ve seen before…on an old dell dimension…for a bad video driver)…so’s i spose I’m obligated…I’ll do it.

4) also: backing up everything…right now…one never knows when she’s gonna blow.

Good luck. With all those disk errors you could be on the verge of a catastrophic disk failure.

UPDATE:

[been a WEIRD ride, believe me]:

1) Performed clean re-install of XP Pro, w/ prior drive reformatting

2) After re-installing Paragon Drive backup…I couldn’t figure out how to bring back individual files & folders from the full backup file on external HD…so…I restored the entire drive…(even tho it meant restoring a partially corrupted OS along w/ the process). I was also worried about never being able to access my personal files/folders again; & panicked

3) everything came back…except for my USB functionality…had no mouse/keyboard

4) plugged mouse into PS2 port w/ adapter…now I have mouse functionality

5) ran another full machine scan w/ AVG…& it found a trojan horse in my system32 folder…killed it

6) Now, the PC shuts off & restarts normally (so far…so good)

7) Deleted USB (nonfunctioning) drivers from device manager…rebooted.

8) Now…hdwe. wizard runs & restores complete USB functionality…I now have keyboard…& acess to my external drive (better yet)

9) performed a full backup of all important files/folders to the external HD…copy & paste style (screw that compression sh_t…& not being able to view entire backup heirarchy)

so…one would thing my troubles are over…but I have the following in device manager:

no way am I deleting drivers for the CPU…I very much want this thing to keep working (which it is now…seemingly ok…despite yellow exclamation warnings)

not sure what to do now…go to athlon & get drivers, I suppose…???

Sticking with the clean install would have been the best thing to do imo. Rethink your backup strategy in the future.
And since you did find a trojan on your system, I would seek another opinion from another tool(s), perhaps 2-3.

what *is* the best tool for these types of things…???

I used to use ‘Norton System Works’ years ago…& that sucker wouldn’t let in anything…detected everything (trojan horses, hyjackware…you name it)

is that still a viable tool…???

Go to the site of the manufacturer of your motherboard for these chipset drivers.

I noticed that compaq only has Windows 7 and Vista listed as the only os choices, did you downgrade from Vista some time ago?
If so you can use SIW to identify your board make and model, look in the hardware section of SIW.

Search: Anti-trojan tools+Free, or Free Anti-Virus Software

Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Also, don’t forget to scan all your drives, including USB, & external drives.

thanks.

I got the CPU drivers from AMD…(not chipset but cpu, in fact). now…everything is working well…save for one thing: my browser continues to get hyjacked. for example…I clicked on your anti-trojan tools link…& was REDIRECTED to monster marketplace.

so…let me refine my question…I need that to stop happening…what’s the best way to do so…???

My best luck in finding and killing browser hijacking (if nothing has taken over and prevents antivirus from updating) is to use Super Antispyware Free, and run a Deep Scan. Clean up anything it flags and repeat the operation until nothing else appears.
