• PC 2100 SD RAM vs 100 Mhz SD RAM

I’ve just junked a 13 month old computer with AMD Athlon XP 1500+ with Quantispeed Architecture and 512 meg, PC 2100 DDR SDRAM.

I have an older computer with 400 MHz Intel Pentium II and 256 mb, 100 MHz SDRAM

If I take the PC2100 DDR SDRAM from the junker and put it into the Pentium II machine will it function correctly?

Or will limitations on the older motherboard architecture cause it to run slowly?

Or, will it not work at all?

You will need to check the spec’s of this mother board to see if this different ram will work.

By checking the specs… is this something I do by going to the manufacturer’s site or is it something I would find on the board itself or provided in the scanty documention that came with the computers?

“by going to the manufacturer’s site ” and looking for the model number of your mother board.

            Great; thanks!

Would I be risking anything if I was to take the PC2100 RAM out of the clunker-on-its-way-to-the-landfill machine and put it into the older machine – just to see what happened?

pc 2100 ram is 184 pin, and pc100 is 168 pin. Unless your mobo is set up to use both, with 2 different sets of sockets, (you can’t use both at the same time, one or the other) it just plain ol’ won’t fit.

              sorry

With the age of your PII I am sure you cannot use the PC2100. As previously stated it is 184 pins and your P II uses 168 pin socket. Also the “notches” on the memory sticks will be different. Finally, they are different technologies.
Why did you scrap the AMD? cool

            • #650433

Thanks for the data on pin numbers. Looks like I have an extra 256 megs of PC2100 RAM!

The AMD came with a unit I bought from MicronPC 13 months ago. The chip set fan went out on it 8 times! And the HDD went south twice. I finally got fed up with it and bought a Dell with a P4 – though I have 2 more years of warrenty on the Micron – when the tech supervisor at Micron said that the chip set fans are supposed to make noise like a jet aircraft! The chipset would make this noise for a few weeks before stopping altogether and causing the motherboard to melt down. Warrenties are wonderful things to have when things go wrong but I’m tired of the down time it takes to call tech support, get a replacement, wait for the replacemnet and then install it. So, I got a new computer for less than I paid 13 months ago [surprise surprise] and all is well with the world!

Besides having RAM that isn’t NOW compatible with your other machine, why just throw out out the one machine without “stripping” out some of the useable parts, like the RAM, power supply, AMD chip, HD’s , etc.? You never know when you might need these components for replacements, testing or other needs in the future.

I think most people who are “into” PC’s all have a spare parts box (or boxes) for just those reasons. I know I sure do, and they come in mighty handy at times. 2cents

Amen to that, Viking AND Cowboy! I’ve got a whole CLOSET full of parts, cables and what-not!

            • #650598

Yeah, that. Parts. If nothing else, you can sell them on eBay. I’m amazed at the prices people get. Many times it’s a few dollars OVER retail new, NOT including shipping. I guess the auctioneering bug just bites people (ok I admit to a few teeth marks myself….)

Not really. Though I wouldn’t recommend going straight into your OS. Instead, put the new(er) RAM into your older machine, but when you turn it on, go straight into the BIOS, to see if it shows up right in the BIOS. If it doesn’t, you can’t use it. If it does, then you should be able to let your OS boot. The reason I recommend this, is because sometimes an OS gets picky when you start putting in and taking out RAM. It’s a good idea to only have the OS do the process once.

Speaking of parts, a few months ago I needed a new cable to install a hard drive. Despite the fact that I have in excess of 10 or so at home, at a major US national retailer I HAD TO PAY $24.95 FOR A HARD DRIVE CABLE because I live about 50 miles or so from the pc! I AM CHANGING UNDERWEAR AT THIS POINT!

Save any parts you can from an old PC! It will come in handy sometime!

      • #650672

I looked at a CD audio cable at CompUSA…same price. $24.95!!!! Can you believe that? (It had like 4 connectors at one end “universal”) Needless to say I went home and tore apart the old box….

One of my suppliers was selling a bundle of 100 of these CD audio cables for around

        • #651127

Hate to say it, but I visited the same national US retailer for my cable. Had I not already read their return policy (15% deduction on opened boxes I think) I might have purchased a hard drive, borrowed the cable for a day, and replaced the cable with one from home the next day. Geez…sounds pretty cheap of me doesn’t it?

…but at least it would’ve got the job done and had the user up and running again in the shortest possible time. Always one of my priorities.

Hey, just saw your profile says you live in Dallas. I work in Dallas, near Garland. Next time you need an IDE cable, give me a holler….I’ll give you one for free! grin

    • #651345

Maybe we should startup a new retail chain….How about ‘Hogs and Hard Drives’. Everything that one needs to hit the open road, or surf the information highway! evilgrin

Yep! I spent 9 years in Texas and if I get back there, I’m nailing my feet to the ground. 7 degrees and and 6 inches of that white s### is not much fun.
