If I asked this, apologies, but I could not find the question or the responses, so…

Is there a utility that will pause all Windows updates indefinitely, but then can be “released” when need be?”

I had/have a “one-click” utility to do it, but brain-dead me cannot find it nor any notes where to find it again.

    Help?

You may be thinking of the Microsoft utility wushowhide, which is extensively discussed here at Woody’s. However, some users find it clunky and prefer a more complete solution to the problem of controlling Windows updates.

Personally, I highly recommend Windows Update Manager (WUMgr), which you can use to accomplish exactly what you’re looking to do.

If you remember how the Windows Update interface looked in the Vista/7 period, WUMgr looks and works similarly to that (though not identically). You can control if and when updates will be installed, and hide those you don’t want to install.

AskWoody.com has a nice guide to using WUMgr. The Forum has a long discussion thread on the tool.

If you run into any problems or have any questions about using WUMgr, just give us a holler!

(Note: There are other tools that work much like WUMgr, but that’s the one I’m most familiar with.)

The free WUmgr has a setting for ‘Disable Automatic Updates’

I found it:  It’s by Gibson Reserch:  https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm

        InControl ONLY stops Feature Updates (v21H2 -> v22H2 -> v23H2) and Version Updates (Win10 -> Win11).

It DOES NOT pause Windows Updates  (Cumulative Updates , Patch Tuesday monthly updates, Previews, .NET updates, etc,) indefinitely.

          Indefinitely or at all?

It has seemed to pause everything…I’ll look again.

By the way, Chuck, I’ve noticed that you’ve posted recently in both Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 forums. Which version of Windows 11 do you currently have, 22H2 or 23H2?

The reason I ask is that support for the Home and Pro versions of Windows 11 22H2 will come to an end on October 8th, just over 5 months from now. With that in mind, if you are on 22H2, you will need to change the settings within InControl after October 8th so you remain fully supported by Microsoft with the monthly security updates.

      Microsoft has started to force-upgrade 21H2 and 22H2 systems…

Microsoft begins forced updates to Windows 11 23H2 — targets PCs running 21H2 and 22H2

I’m not sure if InControl can prevent a forced upgrade.

Yes, it can and so can GPEdit.

What are your sources on specifically stopping Microsoft forced upgrades on Windows 11 systems that are close to, or have reached EOL?

Here’s what Steve Gibson, the developer of InControl, says about that question:

Note that InControl will hold your Windows right where it is, even after the current version and feature release has gone out of support. You will see a complaint about the current version of Windows requiring an update. But your system will not be updated while you are InControl.

And here’s what our own Susan Bradley, a Microsoft MVP with plenty of real world experience keeping MS’s machinations at bay, says about stopping forced upgrades.
